The Lament Summary
- The Lament is a harsh reality of human life written by Anton Chekhov. The story speaks about the Russian sleigh driver Lona and his dead son who died a week ago.
- The story revolves around Lona who’s in deep pain and desperately searching for a stranger to hear his pain in order to make himself feel better.
- He tried sharing his grief thrice with strangers and received hurtful-ignored responses.
- At first, Lona shared with a military man. In beginning, he consoled and gave ears to Lona’s dead son’s story. As he started speaking in detail, the military man yelled at him which made Lona understand that he was not interested anymore.
- Lona was hurt by the reaction of a military man. However, he gave second chance to himself and started sharing with three obnoxious young men; two tall and thin and one hunchback
- The three men was discourteous and offensive towards Lona. Yet, seeing their unmannerly behavior, Lona drives them in less with the hope they will hear through the journey. And one of them replied ‘we shall all die’ which again gave no sympathy
- Lona returned back with his horse. He met a cabman, which bought hope of sharing the story. Unfortunately, the cabman slept.
- Lona was in great despair. He was in desperate need of someone to listen to his grief. Lona watches a crowd of thousands and thinks “Can he not find among these thousands someone who will listen to him?"
- However, in the end, he found his horse listening to him very calmly which made him pour his tears out to her.
