The Ghat of the Only World Summary

The Ghat of the Only World is a story revolving around a poet called Shahid. Shahid is diagnosed with a brain tumor. Amitav Ghosh, the writer, and Shahid shared a very close friendship for a brief point of time. Shahid was a Kashmiri poet who wrote predominantly the lives revolving around the Kashmiri people. Shahid was a jolly man who in spite of having cancer looked only at the positive side of life. He kept fighting cancer and continued loving food and poetry till his last breath. He made Amitav promise to write about him after he has succumbed to the disease. The major event from the story is summarized below:

  • Amitav and Shahid met each other through a common friend and their friendship grew only a year later after they began meeting frequently over food. 
  • The author mentions an incident where he accompanies Shahid’s sister in picking Shahid up from the hospital
  • Shahid who out of self-confidence initially denies the help of a wheelchair later falls down and yet picks himself up and fills the situation up with positivity and laughter
  • Amitav recollects their common love for dishes and an inclination for the game of cricket.
  • Shahid is described to be a party head who loved being around like-minded people, enjoyed ghazals, and always replied in a quick and witty manner.
  • Shahid never had biased opinions about religion and always considered humanity to be the supreme quality of an individual. He was proud of his upbringing.
  • Shahid who wished to spend his final days in Kashmir breathed his last while asleep leaving a deep void in the lives of people who dearly loved him.

Shahid was a simple poet who wrote about his wishes for a world where people were not divided by caste, financial status, or religion. His attitude toward life was to see the bright side of everything and his determination to live every day to the fullest is a lesson we all should imbibe.
