The Summer of the Beautiful White Horse Summary

The Summer of the Beautiful White Horse is an interesting piece penned by William Saroyan where he takes the reader back to an incident from his childhood days. The story revolves around two Armenian boys, Aram and Mourad who are cousins and belong to the most trustworthy tribe known called the Garoghlanaian. This tribe is described to be extremely poverty-stricken but is a proud lineage of people who are known for their honesty and genuineness.

Mourad is portrayed to be a crazy 13-year-old who is a kind-hearted soul with immense self-confidence and loves living creatures. Mourad is also an ardent horse-rider. However, he does not possess the principles and morals of his forefathers. The author narrates how Mourad steals a horse from John Byro, a farmer, and rides on it for days together without anyone’s knowledge along with his 9-year-old cousin Aram. The major events of the story are highlighted below:

• One summer morning Mourad brings a white horse to Aram’s house. He hides the fact that the horse is stolen from a farmer named John Byro. Aram, initially surprised, was made to believe that the horse is for real and was brought so that both cousins could horse-ride together. 
• The boys secretly decide to keep the horse safe at the barn of a vineyard and ride and sing to it at their leisure time. 
• Aram finds out that the horse is actually stolen by Mourad from John Byro and is deeply saddened to see how Mourad has let down the entire tribe’s honor. However, they continue keeping the horse in secrecy and putting the ethics at stake.
• One day, John Byro notices the boys riding the same white horse which went missing from his house. He goes on to inquire about it to their uncle Khosrove.  
• John Byro continues to believe in the tribe’s upbringings and chooses to believe that the horse with the boys has a resemblance to his missing horse. 
• The boys begin to feel guilty for their actions and decide to return it by leaving it at John Byro’s vineyard the next day. 
• Joh Byro is extremely elated to get back his horse who now is much healthier. 

The story thus summarises to the readers the impact of honesty and integrity that prevails in a society. The boys were childish in stealing the horse but when they learned their lessons, they were conscience-stricken and decided to undo their wrongdoings.
