Ranga’s Marriage Summary

The story is staged around the village of Hosahalli in Mysore. Ranga, the protagonist, is an accountant’s son who amongst the other youngsters of the village was fortunate enough to go to Bangalore and complete his studies. Hosahalli is portrayed as a village consisting of simple people who stick to their ancestral traditions. The village is rich in scenic beauty and yet the narrator explains comically how this village has been omitted from the maps. As Ranga arrives people of the village are eager to visit him and see the changes that have come as part of his brief urban stay. The story progresses with the narrator trying to convince Ranga on getting married and how the narrator tactfully stages the unison of Ranga with Ratna. The main notable events of the story are listed as follows:

• Ranga is greeted by the villagers who appreciate the fact that Ranga has not transformed as per the urban style post his education in Bangalore. 
• The narrator discusses with Ranga about his marriage and realizes that Ranga wishes to tie the knot only when he finds a suitable, admirable, and mature alliance. 
• The narrator now stages the meetup of Ranga with Ratna who is a beautiful 19-year-old girl from a big town and is an expert in playing musical instruments. 
• Ranga falls for Ratna on the first visit, but the narrator tries to play a game and lies to Ranga that Ratna is already a married girl. 
• Ranga is disappointed hearing this and decides to visit the astrologer with the narrator. 
• Ranga tries to manipulate the astrologer, however, the astrologer tactfully gets Ranga to commit that he deeply is in love with Ratna. 
• The narrator then goes onto Ratna’s house on behalf of Ranga seeking her hand for marriage. 
• 10 years later, the story depicts that Ranga and Ratna are happily married and the narrator is visiting them on the eve of their son’s third birthday. 

The tale Ranga’s Marriage is a story of a remote village rich in culture and traditional rituals. The narrator’s character is representative of every villager who fears westernization and does everything in his capability to treasure the roots and values of his culture. These efforts are beautifully portrayed in the story with the main subject revolving around the matrimony bond between a village chap and a beautiful girl.
