Class 11 Physics Chapter 2 – Concepts Covered
- To measure a physical quantity, we have to find how many times a standard amount of that quantity is present in the measured quantity. The number obtained is the magnitude and the standard chosen to represent it is the unit of the physical quantity.
| The unit is a chosen standard that is widely accepted and in terms of which the other quantities are measured. |
- To express a measurement, the numerical value (n) and the unit (μ) of the quantity are needed.
| Measurement of physical quantity = Numerical value x Unit |
- Fundamental Units do not require any other physical quantity to express them. They cannot be resolved further.
| For example, in MKS system, the Mass, Length and Time which are expressed in kilogram, metre and second respectively are known as fundamental units. |
- Earlier different systems of units were followed to measure the quantities. Nowadays, the SI system is widely used.
| As per SI Unit System,
|
- The dimensions of a physical quantity refer to the powers to which the fundamental units must be raised to represent a given physical quantity.
| The dimensional formula is an expression demonstrating how the fundamental quantities enter into the unit of that quantity. |
