- Methods of Separation – To separate a substance from a mixture of impurities and other substances, varoius methods of separation are employed.
| Substances in nature are found in impure form. To obtain substances in their pure form, we need to separate the substances from impurities. |
- Hand Picking – Hand picking is a simple and conventional method of separating impurities from substances.
| Hand picking method is suitable for removing impurities which are larger in size and are present in lesser amount. For example, separating stones from rice and pulses. |
- Threshing – The process of separating grains from stalks is known as threshing.
| In this process, the stalks are beaten to separate grains from them. This can be done with the help of bullocks and machines also. |
- Winnowing – It is a method of separating substances with the help of wind or air.
| This process is used to separate lighter components of a mixture from heavier ones. |
- Sieving – In this process, a sieve is used to separate large-sized impurities from a mixture or flour.
| In this, the mixture is made to pass through a sieve. The minute holes in the sieve blocks impurities to pass through and thus separates them from the substance. |
- Sedimentation, Decantation and Filtration – These are some other methods of separating impurities from a mixture.
| Sedimentation is a process in which heavier molecules settles down at the bottom when water is added. Decantation is the process of removal of water and dust and filtration allows to separate solid impurities from a liquid mixture. |
