What are Prime Numbers?

Prime numbers are numbers that have only two factors. The numbers that have 1 and the number itself as its factors are called prime numbers.
Example: 7 is a prime number.
The prime factorization of 7 can be written as 7 = 1 x 7.
Thus, the number 7 has only two factors which are 1 and the number itself (7). Therefore, 7 is a prime number.

Thus, the factors of 437 are 1, 19, 23, and 437. Therefore, 437 is not a prime number since it has more than two factors.
Example 2: Check whether 223 is a prime number or not.
Solution: On the prime factorization of 223, we get
1 x 223 = 223
Thus, there are no other factors of 223 apart from 1 and 223. Hence, 223 is a prime number.

Ans. The number 224 has a total of 12 factors which means the number comes in multiples of 12 numbers which are 1,2, 4, 7, 8, 14, 16, 28, 32, 56, 112, and 224.
Since it has more than 2 factors, 224 is not a prime number but a composite number.

Ans. Natural numbers that have more than two factors are called composite numbers.
For example, 8 is a composite number as
- 1 x 8 = 8
- 2 x 4 = 8
The factors of 8 are 1, 2, 4, and 8. It means that it has more than two factors which makes it a composite number.
Ques. Why is 827 a prime number? (2 Marks)
Ans. When we factorize 827, we get only two factors which are 1 and 827. According to the definition of prime numbers, the numbers with two factors are prime numbers. Hence 827 is a prime number.
Ques. Why is 15 not a prime number? (2 Marks)
Ans. The factors of 15 are
- 1 x 15 = 15
- 3 x 5 = 15
Thus, 15 has more than two factors which are 1,3, 5, and 15. Since it has more than four factors, 15 is not a prime number. It's a composite number.
Ques. Do we consider 0 as a prime number? (1 Mark)
Ans. No zero will not be considered a prime number because any prime number must be greater than 1. Since zero is less than 1, so, it is not a prime number.
