Sodium dichromate is an inorganic compound containing 2 sodium atoms, 2 chromium atoms, and 7 oxygen atoms having its chemical formula as (Na2Cr2O7). Sodium Dichromate, Na2Cr2O7, is a crystalline solid and has an orange to red appearance. Due to the presence of 7 oxygen atoms, the sodium dichromate compound acts as a strong oxidizing agent because it has many oxygen to give to other species to oxidize them by reducing itself.

- The first step includes the fusion of ore with sodium carbonate, which is basic in nature.
- The ore is then heated at a very high temperature of 1000 degrees Celsius in the presence of air because oxygen is needed in huge amounts for the process.
- The reaction that takes place is
2Cr2O3 + 4Na2CO3 + 3O2 → 4Na2CrO4 + 4CO2
These steps solubilize chromium and then extract it in hot water.

Ans. Explanation of Reaction
This is a displacement reaction, in this reaction Na being a more electro-positive element is attracted by the Cl and the potassium is displaced and goes in the place of Na resulting in the formation of potassium dichromate and common salt (NaCl).
Process of Reaction:
Sodium dichromate is treated with KCI and the resulting solution is evaporated to get orange-coloured crystals of potassium dichromate.
Na2Cr2O7 + 2KCl → K2Cr2O7 + 2NaCl

On increasing the pH of the K2Cr2O7 solution, the dichromate ion changes to a chromate ion

Also, in potassium dichromate the bonds present between potassium and oxygen are covalent that are not easy to break.

Ans. You can use sodium dichromate with a sample solution to test for the presence of methanol.
- To do so, mix sodium dichromate solution with sulfuric acid.
- Swirl gently to mix, then add a few drops of the mixed solution to a test tube or other small container containing the alcohol.
- Shake this container a few times in a gentle manner.
- Waft the air from the container’s mouth towards your nose by fanning the air with your hand.
- With the container placed 8-12 inches away from the face of the person who is in the lab, take note of the smell: If it is irritating and pungent, methanol is present in the alcohol. If the smell is dominating and fruity, only ethanol is present.
