Venus is Earth's nearest planetary neighbor and the second planet from the Sun. Since it has a compact and rocky surface therefore it is among the four terrestrial planets of our solar system. The other three terrestrial planets are Mercury, Earth, and Mars.

  • In our solar system, Venus is the brightest planet, with a hellish atmosphere, and volcanoes covering most of its surface.
  • It is the hottest planet in our solar system even though Mercury is closest to the sun.
  • The atmosphere of Venus contains mostly carbon dioxide i.e. about 96.5%
  • Some other gases present in the atmosphere of Venus are nitrogen and sulfur dioxide.
  • The surface temperature of Venus is about 900 ℃ which is hot enough to melt lead.
  • The atmospheric pressure of Venus is 90 times more than the Earth’s atmospheric pressure.
  • The planet Venus has no moons.

Very Short Answers Questions [1 Mark Questions]

Ques. How many moons does Planet Venus have?

  1. Five
  2. Two
  3. Zero
  4. Six

Ans. The correct answer is c. Zero

Explanation: Venus does not have any moon.

Ques. The surface temperature on Venus can reach approximately_____.

  1. 871 °C
  2. 671 °C
  3. 571 °C
  4. 471 °C

Ans. The correct answer is d. 471 °C

Explanation: The atmosphere of Venus is thick and mostly it contains carbon dioxide which creates a greenhouse effect. This causes no escape of heat from the atmosphere, therefore its temperature reaches approximately 471 °C.

Ques. The second brightest natural object after the Moon is Venus.

  1. True
  2. False

Ans. The correct answer is a. True

Explanation: Due to the presence of clouds of sulphuric acid in its atmosphere Venus looks shiny and it can be noticed even in the daytime from the surface of the earth which makes Venus the second brightest natural object after the moon.

Ques. How long does it take Venus to rotate, or spin around, once?

  1. 243 Earth hours
  2. 243 Earth days
  3. 243 Earth year
  4. 1 Earth hour

Ans. The correct answer is b. 243 Earth days

Explanation: Venus takes 243 Earth days to complete one rotation about its axis.

Ques. How far is Planet Venus from the Sun?

  1. 260 million km
  2. 343 million km
  3. 108 million km
  4. 54 million km

Ans. The correct answer is c. 108 million km

Explanation: The distance of the planet Venus from the sun is 108 million km i.e. 10,80,00,000 km.

Short Answers Questions [2 Marks Questions]

Ques. Why is Venus called a windy planet?

Ans. Venus is called a windy planet because winds in Venus have super-fast speeds of around 724 Kmph. These winds are faster than several tornadoes on Earth.

Ques. What is the surface pressure on Venus compared to the atmospheric pressure of Earth?

Ans. The surface pressures of Venus are around 90-92 bars which are equivalent to the pressure in the oceans of the Earth found at a depth of 1 km.

Ques. Venus has Phases. Explain.

Ans. The phases of Venus are variations in the lighting of the surface of the planet. The phases of Venus are due to its rotation around the sun inside the Earth’s orbit which gives a telescopic observer a sequence of progressive lighting similar to the Moon’s phases.

Ques. Why is Venus called the “morning star” or “evening star”?

Ans. Venus appears even before sunrise in the eastern sky and also appears just after sunset in the western sky. Therefore it is called the “morning star” or “evening star” even though it is not a star. The best time to observe Venus is 1-3 hours before sunrise or 1-3 hours after sunset.

Long Answers Questions [3 Marks Questions]

Ques. Why is Venus sometimes called Earth's twin?

Ans. Venus is sometimes called Earth’s twins because

  • These two planets have almost the same size.
  • These have almost the same mass.
  • These two planets also formed in the same part of the solar system.
  • They are made up of the same materials

Ques. Why is Venus the hottest planet?

Ans. Venus is the hottest planet in our solar system although Mercury is closer to the sun. It has a thick atmosphere that is about 100 times denser than the atmosphere of the Earth. It is full of greenhouse gas carbon dioxide about 96.5% of the total gases and also other gases are nitrogen and sulfur dioxide. This thick atmosphere creates a greenhouse effect that traps heat and prevents it from escaping.

Ques. Explain why Venus has two sunrises in a year.

Ans. Venus takes 225 Earth days to complete one rotation about the sun which means a year on Venus is of about 225 Earth days. After every 117 Earth days, the planet Venus has a sunrise. That means in a year Venus has two sunrises.

Very Long Answers Questions [5 Marks Questions]

Ques. What are the 5 characteristics of Venus?

Ans. The following are the characteristics of the Venus planet

  • It is the second closest planet to the Sun, having an orbital distance of 67 million miles i.e. 108 million km or 0.72 AU.
  • It is also known as the Earth’s sister planet, as it is just a little smaller than the Earth.
  • The value of acceleration due to gravity on the surface of Venus is 8.87 m/s2
  • The mass of Venus is nearly 81.5% and has 90% surface area as compared to that of the Earth.
  • Venus spins clockwise (retrograde rotation), compared to the other planets. Due to this, the sun rises in the west and sets in the east on Venus.

Ques. Explain the discovery of Venus.

Ans. Venus can be easily spotted by plain eyes in the sky at night as it is the brightest planet in our solar system. In ancient times it was identified by the people.

  • In 1610 Galileo Galilei made the first telescopic observation of Venus.
  • The first aircraft NASA’s Mariner 2 on 14 December 1962 visited Venus successfully.
  • After then many aircraft visited and explore Venus NASA’s Magellan, which mapped the planet's surface with radar.
  • Soviet spacecraft made a successful landing on the surface of Venus but it didn’t survive long due to the extreme heat and crushing pressure.
  • NASA's Pioneer Venus Multiprobe, one of the first probes to visit Venus, survived for about an hour after impacting the surface in 1978.

Ques. What is unusual about the rotation of Venus?

Ans. Venus spins about its axis in the opposite direction very slowly as compared to the spin of the Earth and other planets.

  • It takes 243 Earth days to complete one rotation.
  • Also, it takes 225 Earth days to complete one rotation around the sun as compared to Earth which takes about 365 days.
  • This happens because Venus is very close to the sun than the Earth.
  • A day on Venus is a little longer than a year on Venus.
