Ques. Is a CAT score of 80-90 percentile enough for an IIM?
Ans. Yes, for six IIMs. IIM Calcutta, IIM Bangalore, IIM Kozhikode and IIM Mumbai have a General category cutoff of 85 percentile, while IIM Lucknow and IIM Indore need 90. Five newer IIMs are also in this range. The older IIMs also need a minimum score in each section, so a balanced score in VARC, DILR and QA matters as much as the overall percentile.
| IIM | CAT Cutoff (General) | Sectional Minimum | Average/Median Package |
|---|---|---|---|
| IIM Calcutta | 85 CAT | 80 VARC, 80 DILR, 75 QA | 30.00 LPA |
| IIM Bangalore | 85 CAT | 80 VARC, 75 DILR, 75 QA | 32.61 LPA |
| IIM Kozhikode | 85 CAT | 75 in each section | 27.00 LPA |
| IIM Mumbai | 85 CAT | 80 VARC, 80 DILR, 75 QA | 34.00 LPA |
| IIM Lucknow | 90 CAT | 85 in each section | 30.00 LPA |
| IIM Indore | 90 CAT | 80 in each section | 25.50 LPA |
Ques. Which IITs accept a CAT score of 80-90 percentile?
Ans. Four IIT management schools have a cutoff in this range. DoMS IIT Madras and DoMS IIT Kanpur close at 85 percentile, while SJMSOM IIT Bombay and VGSoM IIT Kharagpur close at 90. All four charge much less than private colleges, which is why three of them are in the top four for ROI. DoMS IIT Kanpur is the cheapest IIT option at 7.64 Lakh.
| IIT Management School | CAT Cutoff (General) | Total Course Fees (INR) | Average/Median Package |
|---|---|---|---|
| DoMS IIT Kanpur | 85 CAT | 7.64 Lakh | 16.50 LPA |
| DoMS IIT Madras | 85 CAT | 13.50 Lakh | 16.78 LPA |
| SJMSOM IIT Bombay | 90 CAT | 17.30 Lakh | 26.73 LPA |
| VGSoM IIT Kharagpur | 90 CAT | 13.04 Lakh | 20.65 LPA |
Ques. Which college in this band offers the best return on investment?
Ans. DoMS IIT Kanpur, with an ROI of 215.97%. Its total fee is 7.64 Lakh and its median salary is 16.50 LPA, so it is the only college in this range that returns more than twice its cost. VGSoM IIT Kharagpur comes next at 158.36%, followed by SJMSOM IIT Bombay at 154.51%. Among the older IIMs, IIM Lucknow is best at 144.58%, because its fee of 20.75 Lakh is the lowest of the six.
Ques. Which college pays the most at this percentile?
Ans. IIM Mumbai has the highest median salary at 34.00 LPA, followed by IIM Bangalore at 32.61 LPA and SPJIMR Mumbai at 31.50 LPA. For the single highest offer, IIM Lucknow is at the top with 100.00 LPA, followed by SPJIMR at 89.00 LPA and IIM Kozhikode at 81.00 LPA.
Ques. Which is a better choice, IIM Mumbai or SPJIMR Mumbai?
Ans. Both have the same 85 percentile cutoff and both are in Mumbai, so the choice depends on cost and brand. IIM Mumbai is a government institute with a higher median salary and a slightly higher fee. SPJIMR has a better CD Score, a much better IIRF rank and higher top offers.
| Parameter | IIM Mumbai | SPJIMR Mumbai |
|---|---|---|
| CAT Cutoff (General) | 85 CAT | 85 CAT |
| Ranking in India | 13 (2026) | 8 (2026) |
| CD Score (Out of 1000) | 829 | 869 |
| Total Course Fees (INR) | 25.50 Lakh | 24.86 Lakh |
| Average/Median Package | 34.00 LPA | 31.50 LPA |
| Highest Package | - | 89.00 LPA |
| ROI | 133.33% | 126.71% |
Verdict: Choose IIM Mumbai for the higher median salary and the IIM brand. Choose SPJIMR for consulting and finance jobs, where its placement record and alumni network count for more.
Ques. Which colleges accept a CAT score below 85 percentile?
Ans. Four colleges have a General category cutoff below 85. MICA Ahmedabad and LIBA Chennai close at 80, IIM Visakhapatnam at 82 and K J Somaiya Mumbai at 84. MICA needs extra care: 80 percentile only allows a student to apply for MICAT, and the CAT score counts for just 35% of the final selection.
| College Name | CAT Cutoff (General) | Total Course Fees (INR) | Average/Median Package |
|---|---|---|---|
| MICA Ahmedabad | 80 CAT | 29.50 Lakh | 18.00 LPA |
| LIBA Chennai | 80 CAT | 19.10 Lakh | 11.00 LPA |
| IIM Visakhapatnam | 82 CAT | 23.99 Lakh | 15.50 LPA |
| K J Somaiya Mumbai | 84 CAT | 23.88 Lakh | 12.00 LPA |
Ques. Is work experience required at these colleges?
Ans. No college in this range makes work experience compulsory, and all of them admit fresh graduates every year. But work experience does add marks at some colleges, especially SPJIMR Mumbai, IMI Delhi and IMT Ghaziabad. At the IIMs, academic diversity and gender diversity usually matter more than months of work experience.
Ques. What is the admission process at these colleges?
Ans. Every college in this range first shortlists students based on their CAT percentile and then holds its own second round. The steps are mostly the same everywhere.
| Step | What to Do |
|---|---|
| Register for CAT | Apply through iimcat.ac.in during the August to September window |
| Apply to each institute | Submit a separate application to every college, since a CAT score alone does not register a candidate |
| Clear the qualifying cutoff | Meet the overall percentile and, at the IIMs, the sectional minimums in VARC, DILR and QA |
| Attend the second stage | Sit the Written Ability Test, Group Discussion or Personal Interview as the institute specifies |
| Composite score | Final selection weighs CAT percentile, academic record, work experience and diversity |
Ques. Does clearing the cutoff guarantee an interview call?
Ans. No. These percentiles only make a student eligible for the next round. They are not the scores at which interview calls are actually sent. IIM Bangalore clearly states that students called for interviews scored higher than its published cutoff, and IIM Mumbai warns that real cutoffs may be much higher than the minimum. So treat 85 as the minimum for an older IIM, not the target.
Ques. Which specialisations are available in this band?
Ans. Many specialisations are available because this range includes both the general management IIMs and some specialist colleges. MICA Ahmedabad is the best choice for marketing and brand communication. IMI Delhi and IMT Ghaziabad are strong in banking and finance, SJMSOM IIT Bombay and DoMS IIT Madras in analytics and operations, GIM Goa in healthcare and big data, and IIM Amritsar in business analytics.
Ques. How does this band compare with the 70-80 percentile range?
Ans. The difference is big. The 70-80 percentile range includes IIM Shillong and some strong private colleges, with median salaries from about 9.55 LPA to 26.44 LPA. The 80-90 range opens up six older IIMs, five newer IIMs and four IIT management schools, and the top median salary rises to 34.00 LPA. Colleges with a cutoff of exactly 80 appear in both lists.
Ques. Which entrance exams do these colleges accept besides CAT?
Ans. Most colleges in this range accept more than one exam. This helps students whose CAT percentile is just below their target college's cutoff.

Ques. Which newer IIMs accept a CAT score of 80-90 percentile?
Ans. Several newer IIMs have a cutoff in this range. IIM Visakhapatnam is the easiest to get into at 82 percentile, while IIM Amritsar, IIM Jammu, IIM Sambalpur and IIM Sirmaur need 90. Their fees are 21.13 Lakh to 23.99 Lakh, close to the older IIMs, but their median salaries are lower at 12.98 LPA to 15.80 LPA.

Ques. Is MICA Ahmedabad really available at 80 percentile?
Ans. Not exactly. The 80 percentile only allows a student to apply for MICAT, which is MICA's own written test. It is not the admission cutoff. In the final selection, the CAT or XAT score counts for 35%, MICAT for 25%, the Personal Interview for 20% and the Group Exercise for 10%. Students who get into MICA usually have a higher percentile and a strong creative profile.
Ques. Why is JBIMS Mumbai not listed here?
Ans. Because CAT is not a realistic way into its main course. JBIMS fills most of its MMS seats through MAH-CET under the Maharashtra CAP process, where the 2025 closing percentile was 99.93 for the Open State category. CAT is used for only 18 seats for students from outside Maharashtra and two other courses, and its CAT cutoff was 96 from 2021 to 2024. So students with 80-90 percentile should not plan for it.
Ques. Which colleges in this band are strongest for finance?
Ans. SPJIMR Mumbai, IIM Calcutta and IIM Mumbai place the most students in finance jobs, with Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan Chase and Morgan Stanley hiring at all three. IMI Delhi and IMT Ghaziabad both offer special banking and finance courses at 90 percentile. LBSIM New Delhi offers the cheapest finance option here through its PG Diploma in Financial Management.
Ques. Which colleges in this band are strongest for marketing and analytics?
Ans. MICA Ahmedabad is the top choice for marketing and brand communication, with a median salary of 18.00 LPA. IMT Ghaziabad is also well known for marketing. For analytics, SJMSOM IIT Bombay and DoMS IIT Madras benefit from the technical strength of their IITs, while GIM Goa and IIM Amritsar offer special big data and business analytics courses.
Ques. How reliable are the cutoff figures on this page?
Ans. Every cutoff is the General category, Round 1 closing percentile from the college's Collegedunia cutoff page. Two points need care. Some colleges show the same cutoff for five years, which is more likely a minimum than an actual closing score. Also, the older IIMs publish minimum cutoffs that are much lower than the scores at which interview calls are sent, so a student with exactly 85 should treat an older IIM as a difficult target.
Ques. What scholarships are available at these colleges?
Ans. Colleges in this range offer four types of scholarships, and most offer more than one.
| Scholarship Type | Basis |
|---|---|
| Merit scholarships | CAT percentile, academic record or first-term performance |
| Need-based fee waivers | Family income, supported by an income certificate |
| Government and category support | SC, ST, OBC, EWS and PwD schemes, plus reduced tuition at public institutes |
| Industry and alumni endowments | Corporate-funded awards, common at the older IIMs and SPJIMR Mumbai |
