GATE 2027 will be held only at exam centres within India. IIT Madras has confirmed that no international centres will be offered. Foreign nationals and Indian citizens abroad must travel to India to appear for the exam.

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has released the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2027 exam city information. The official notice confirms that GATE 2027 will be conducted only at centres within India. No international exam centres will be offered for the 2027 cycle. The details are live on the official portal at gate2027.iitm.ac.in.
GATE is a national-level entrance exam for postgraduate engineering and PSU recruitment. It is jointly conducted by IISc Bengaluru and seven IITs on behalf of the National Coordination Board. IIT Madras is the organising institute for the 2027 edition and released the GATE 2027 complete schedule on their official website.
GATE 2027 Zones and Coordinating Institutes
The exam is organised across eight zones. Each zone is coordinated by one IISc or IIT. Candidates may choose six preferred cities from within a single zone.
| Zone | Coordinating Institute | Region Covered |
|---|---|---|

| Zone 2 | IIT Bombay | West India |
| Zone 3 | IIT Delhi | North-Central India |

| Zone 5 | IIT Kanpur | Central-East India |
| Zone 6 | IIT Kharagpur | Eastern India |
| Zone 7 | IIT Madras | South-Central India |

The tentative list covers more than 250 cities and towns spread across India. IIT Madras may add or remove a city at its discretion. The final list will be locked closer to the exam.

Who Is Affected by the Decision?
The decision directly affects foreign nationals and Indian citizens residing abroad. Such candidates must now travel to India to appear for the exam. They must also select an Indian city from the official zone list during registration.
GATE was earlier conducted in select overseas cities across Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Ethiopia, Singapore, the UAE and Nepal. These centres were withdrawn from GATE 2026 and remain unavailable for GATE 2027. The exam will be held across 30 test papers spanning engineering, science and humanities. The GATE 2027 scorecard will remain valid for three years from the date of announcement.

How Can Foreign Candidates Apply for GATE 2027?
Foreign nationals, NRI, OCI and PIO candidates can still appear for GATE 2027. They must register through the official portal like every other candidate. They must pick an Indian city as their exam centre. Travel and stay arrangements must be handled by the candidate.
GATE was previously held in six countries outside India. The 2026 cycle became the first in years without any overseas centre. GATE 2027 continues this India-only model for the second year in a row.
