The J&K Government is elevating nursing and paramedical education by upgrading existing institutions and establishing new ones including 55 new nursing colleges and increased seat intake.

New Delhi: With the goal of enhancing nursing and paramedical education in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, the government has launched a comprehensive set of measures. This includes the enhancement of 10 General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) schools and the establishment of 5 new nursing colleges, bringing the total count of nursing colleges in the region to 55.

Among these institutions, 15 are under government administration, while 40 are privately managed, significantly increasing the available seats from a modest 500 to a substantial 1300 in the government sector.

Dr. Yashpal Sharma, Director (Coordination) of New Government Medical Colleges, Nursing and Paramedical Colleges in Jammu and Kashmir, provided insights to Excelsior, shedding light on the advancements made in elevating nursing and paramedical education in the region.

In the operational Government Colleges, faculty positions have been approved, although, in certain instances, the arrangements for faculty are still being finalized, wherever necessary.

Further, there was an implementation of temporary faculty arrangements to ensure the uninterrupted progress of courses. It's worth noting that many of these colleges are located within Medical Colleges and district hospitals, where they already have existing staff to support the students, he elaborated.

Significantly, in conjunction with the formation of new nursing colleges, 10 existing institutions are presently in the process of enhancements, with several already operational and accepting students. Furthermore, the private sector is actively engaged in providing Bachelor of Science (BSc) Nursing Programs.

Consequently, based on official statistics, the cumulative seat count for B.Sc Nursing in Government Colleges within Jammu and Kashmir has reached 780, while in the private sector, there are approximately 2,000 available seats.

The Government’s commitment to improving healthcare education extends beyond nursing, as it is actively working to enhance paramedical education in the region. In this regard, the B.Sc Paramedics programs have been introduced in both new and existing Government Medical Colleges (GMCs) across J&K.

In pursuit of this goal, B.Sc Paramedics programs have been introduced in both the recently established and existing Government Medical Colleges (GMCs) throughout Jammu and Kashmir.

Dr. Sharma provided insights, stating that in addition to the successful conversion of all General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) programs in nursing education, we have also enrolled students for B.Sc Paramedics in different GMCs. The program is currently in progress.

The expansion of paramedical education encompasses the introduction of B.Sc programs in Dialysis and Lab Technician fields, previously unavailable in the region, ensuring a skilled workforce for dialysis procedures and laboratory work.

Additionally, the Government of India has extended substantial financial support, allocating ine 6 crores for the upgrading of GNM Schools to accommodate B.Sc Nursing courses, along with a contingency grant.

According to officials, INR 3.75 crore has already been disbursed, with the remaining funds expected to be released this year. These funds are anticipated to significantly contribute to the overall improvement of nursing-focused educational institutions.

Dr. Sharma also highlighted a government initiative mandating the presence of an associated nursing college for every medical college. To facilitate the establishment of these associated nursing colleges, INR 10 crores are being allocated to support the implementation of this initiative.

Dr. Sharma mentioned that they had already implemented it in all the Medical Colleges, except for Handwara, for which a proposal had been submitted to the Government of India and subsequently approved. He noted that INR 1.50 crore had been released in their favor.

Noting that these measures would enable Jammu and Kashmir to produce a higher number of skilled professionals in nursing and paramedics, he highlighted that this development not only offered expanded employment opportunities but also guaranteed the region's ability to meet the increasing demands of both existing healthcare facilities and newly established Medical Colleges.
