ISI Kolkata, MASTER OF STATISTICS [M.STAT.]

Reviewed on Jun 15, 2020

Course Curriculum Overview

Course curriculum is pretty tough and the students who are new to the concepts are often seen facing lots of troubles. The course curriculum also involves intensive research about the topics which gives us better understanding.

Placement Experience

4.5

Job opportunities at our campus are very appreciable as industries top companies come to the campus and select candidates for most interesting roles with compatible salaries. The students who do not qualify for certain companies are advised to participate in other companies.

Fee Structure And Facilities

Fee structure is feasible because a master degree at such a cost is remarkable. According to the popularity of the course among the other courses, it is very satisfying to see how quality education can be accessed at affordable prices.

Campus Life

The gender ratio at our college is extremely fair and also, at the time of placements we never witness any discrimination against boy or girl and the selection is completely based on the potential of the student.

Hostel Facilities

Hostel in our college are well maintained and the warden of the college is also very friendly. It has been a great experience to live in such a place. We are provided all the necessary things which a student needs.

Admission

I had completed my graduation in B. Stats (Hons) from ISI so I directly got admission in this course without any interview or selection process, but in case a student is not from the same they need to undergo examination and selection process.

Faculty

4.5

The faculty of the college is highly skilled and holds a professional degree in the subjects they teach. The nature of the teachers is very polite and are always there to assist us with any issues that we face during our preparations.

Likes

Fixed timetable Classes, regular assessment and class test
The professors are very qualified and their teaching style is excellent.
A lot of books are available in the main library as well as in the department library

Course Curriculum Overview:

The syllabus and curriculum of Calcutta University is aligned with other entrance examination (eg.IIT JAM, JEST, TIFR, GATE etc.) Specially for the Physics BSc course. And the syllabus is updated Artificial intelligence bacis, Python Advance level is in syllabus, it's completed in college. Point to be Noted - The time given to prepare for the exam is sometimes ample but sometimes it is very less. So we have to prepare syllabus in time which is little bit frustrating.

Campus life: Hype vs Truth

Likes

The discipline is followed very strictly. Also you have access to library which is good, teachers are helpful and no ragging policy which is strictly followed and has a decent environment.
Thery conduct seminars which encourages students. Many faculty members are knowledgeable experienced in their respective subjects and helpful willing to solve doubts beyond the classroom also.
The college has decent infrastucture including classrooms, labs and library .

Dislikes

While the curriculum is decent ,it lacks sufficeint practical implementation.More hands on projects, real world application and industry exposure would improve learning significantly.
Campus life can sometimes fell limited in terms of active student interaction.Opportunites for clubs, networking and collaborative activities could be improved.
The college comes under St tHomas School so the campus is not great it is compact and has a canteen.

Placement Experience:

I heard it from seniors that before lockdown it was pretty decent but after lockdown the company visits are not that much comapred to before lockdown.Cognizent, Accenture, Mindtree, PQ360 which is a startup company of our senior alumni etc. visits.

Likes

The campus is big and full of greenery with the vibrant feel of nature.
The students of the same batch are friendly and helpful.
The teacher's are friendly and helpful. They do provide helpful recommendations for the betterment of your future.

Dislikes

The seniors are overly harsh when it comes to 1st year.
The infrastructure could be worked on. The college lacks renovation.
The hostel does require everyday cleaning and renovation as well as the campus.

Placement Experience:

I don't know much about this but I guess from the sixth semester the students are eligible for campus placements. This year a student from AEIE got a package of 11.2 lacs per annum and the average is around 4 lacs per annum.

The Framework is said to be great, with well equipped classroom and simply get to the libraries.
The offices at this college are great. In any case, these changes depending on the quality of the companies going by the college and the victory of the internship changes by the internship.
Understudies appreciate the campus life and flexibility to associate with others understudies. However, there are few impediments such as the division of floors between senior and junior. College life is nice and could be an inviting place for others

Dislikes

The college doesn't have lodging, and understudies must organize their settlement locally.
The college doesn't have a big field to play like any other big college

Placement Experience:

In Syamaprasad College placements and internships are given to the final year students. And the companies that offer placements are Accenture, Deloitte, KPMG, etc. The highest package goes up to 20-24 lakhs and the average package goes to 6-8 lakhs. 70-80% of students get their placement in my college. At that time I planned to get the degree and apply to a multinational company with a high salary package with company facilities.

A brief discussion on ISI, Kolkata

Reason for preferring this college over others: I wished to study statistics and Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) is considered to be one of the best institutes in India to study mathematics and statistics. That is why I decided to take admission here. Admission process:(I) The written exam includes an objective paper(UGA) containing 30 questions and a subjective paper(UGB) containing 8 questions. If a student scores above the cut off marks in UGA (which varies from year to year but is typically between 65 to 80 out of 120) then his/her solutions for UGB will be checked. (II) Suppose the student got x in UGA and y in UGB. If ax+by(where a and b(a<b) are specified but varies year to year) is greater than a specified cutoff, then he/she will be selected for interview. (III) If the student scores z in the interview and his/her total score ax+by+cz(c will be specified but is usually greater than a+b) is above a certain cutoff then his/her name will be published in the merit list. However, the final selection and admission will take place according to the rank on the merit list.Good aspects: The professors have clear and in-depth knowledge of the subject and they teach based on their research experience. Huge emphasis is given in the understanding of the basic concepts. Amazing collection of books and journals in the library. Scope to attend seminars on theoretical, applied as well as interdisciplinary research. The canteen food is good as well.Bad aspects: Too much academic pressure, you cannot afford to study only weeks before exam and have to study throughout the year, from every batch on an average 5 students have to repeat an academic year and 2-3 students get chucked out of the institute. Unlike many other institutes ISI does not have various clubs that can help one with their personality development....Read More
