NIT Trichy, B. TECH IN CIVIL ENGINEERING

Remarks

The only two demerits if this college are that the campus is not that aesthetically pleasing and that placent oppurtunities for core non circuital branches are limited and not up to the reputation of this college. Otherwise, it is a very good college offering sound technical education for students with limited resources.

Entrance Preview

I got into this college by writing JEE Mains. I scored 233 in it i opted for NIT Trichy because it is regarded as one of the best NITs and has a good reputation i elected civil engineering as my stream.

Course Curriculum Overview

3.5

There isn't much focus on research by the department but it's mostly upto the student. It is a pretty relaxed system where the student has the option for doing research if he wants or not. There are electives in the 3rd and 4th years and you get to choose what subjects you would prefer over otgers, though there might not always be a spot for the course you wish to go for. There are also global electives in which you can study one subject from any other stream and there are courses on management and entrepreneurship too.

Internships Opportunities

Companies do visit the campus for internships and there are plenty of companies for curcuital branches like EEE, ECE, CSE, ICE etc. Non curcuital branches lag far behind in this respect with very few companies opening for internships. Stipend paid is also plenty for most students.

Placement Experience

3.5

Again, job opportunities are very good for circuital branches with almost 100% placement and handsome salaries ( above 10 lacs and even abive 20 lacs fir some) while the non circuital branches like mechanical, civil, metallurgy etc. lag behind and are mainly dependant on one or two large recruiters for their placements in core sector. The salaries in core sector jobs are low from 4-6 lacs.Reputed companies like Texas Instruments, amazon, visa, sandisk, ITC, P&G visit the campus.

College Events

4

We have a cultural fest, Festember. It is a big college fest and one of the biggest in the country. 8000-10000 people were a part of it this year. Tech fest: Pragyan is the official cultural fest of NIT Trichy with a large number of colleges from south India taking part and competing in it. It is also a big and we'll known fest.

Fee Structure And Facilities

Though the fee structure was very reasonable for our batch but it has been increased now, for our juniors. It's still less, almost 40000 per semester for tuition and 22000 for hostel fee. There are talks of increasing the tuition fee even more for 2016 batch but it's not confirmed yet so considering the situation right now, it's quite reasonable.

Fees and Financial Aid

Plenty of scholarships are provided by national and state governments and other institutions. If a student does really well in academics, there are plenty of optionstherr. Student loan is easily available with SBI offering loans in its own during the admission procedure.

Campus Life

3

Campus life is peaceful and fun. The gender ration is a bit off sure, there is 80:20 boys to girls ratio. Parties are common in hostels. There are plenty of societies for students to join according to their interests and they're mostly fun to be in. There is no discrimination based on gender, ethnicity, race etc among students. All students live happily together and no enimity is ever based on above mentioned factors. You get to meet people from different parts of the country and the world and all of us live in peace.

Hostel Facilities

2

B.Tech students don't get single rooms. We share rooms with 2 roommates in the first year and then one roommate for the next three years. Although the hostels aren't too bad but they're definitely not upto the standard of some of the other NITs where they get much more space. Hostels are neat and clean though with regular cleaning. There are plenty of hostels so there is no shortage of seats.

Alumni/Alumna

There is a strong alumni network of NIT Trichy and most of them are really helpful if you know them. It is a close knit community and alumni still feel like they're a part of this college as they visit for fests and other occasions.

Exam Structure

There are 2 exams, cycle tests, as they are called between the semester and one final. The cycle tests have 20% weightage each while final has 40% weightage. Rest 20% is based on assignments. It is not very hectic and there's a lot of free time in days other than tests.

Faculty

3

The faculty, as a whole is 'okay' some professors are really good and highly motivated to impart knowledge while there are plenty who either aren't good enough to teach or just don't care enough. Overall, I believe that the standards do get better as you move on to the pre final and final years of your course.
