IISER Mohali, Integrated MS degree

Remarks

Good exposure to different subjects, State of the art labs, well equipped and large library, autonomous Institute of National Importance, outreach activities with top notch research institutes both national and foreign

Course Curriculum Overview

The institute is autonomous and has its own syllabus which is available in the institute website. The students are usually tested on their knowledge, not on how much information they can cram up. Companies come to promote start-ups. Conferences and seminars, both academic and industrial, are held. The faculty here is dedicated, although the student has to show his or her own dedication and hard work in order to extract extra exposure from the faculty.

Placement Experience

3.5

Companies don't usually visit our institute too frequently. The last year it was the first time when companies actually visited the institute. The response was good. Many alumni work in international companies and they communicate with their juniors. They refer international labs or companies to work in. One alumnus started making an enzyme as a startup and our institute buys them from the startup. It costs half the price than it would if it was purchased from foreign.

College Events

4

A big festival called INSOMNIA is annually held here. There are different clubs ranging from maths to arts to quiz to cricket or football to camping. They are usually active. Different regional festivals like the Punjabi festivals, Ganesh chaturthi, Pongal, Onam, Saraswati Puja, etc are held.

Fees and Financial Aid

KVPY not offered by IISER Mohali but by MHRD. INSPIRE fellowship is also offered by the MHRD and some students over here (in every batch) do get that scholarship.

Campus Life

Strong campus Wi-Fi is available, library is large and well equipped. Labs are also well equipped with state of the art instruments. Sports facilities are good. Here there is a large stadium. Also facilities for badminton, volleyball, basketball, lawn tennis, table tennis, etc are available.

Hostel Facilities

In hostel there are single rooms. In first two years the rooms are shared (they are assigned by the authorities), then one can get their own rooms based on availability. One has to personally contact the person who is going to leave a room after his or her last year (PhD or MS) and has to make one's own arrangements for a new room after the first two years. Basic needs are mostly available, though one needs to lodge complaints to the caretaker for getting things repaired. The caretakers are usually prompt in their action.

Course Curriculum Overview:

I’d rate the curriculum like 7/10 in terms of relevance and comprehensiveness — it covers all the major CSE subjects like DSA, OS, DBMS, CN, AI, ML, Cloud, Cybersecurity basics, etc., and honestly that was one of the reasons I chose this course because at least the core subjects are solid even if PTU keeps some old-school stuff in the syllabus. The curriculum does prepare you for real-world stuff, but only to a point — like, if you focus on coding labs and projects you’ll be fine for internships, but if you depend only on classroom theory then it won’t help much because industry wants hands-on skills. For higher studies also it’s okay because theory depth in subjects like OS and DBMS is decent enough. But yeah, improvements are definitely needed — some subjects feel outdated, teachers should use more practical examples, and we need more real projects instead of copy-paste lab manuals; also some faculty teach directly from slides which gets boring fast. Exams come twice per semester (sessionals) plus the final end-sem around December/May; they’re mostly easy if you write long answers, but tricky if you rely only on understanding because PTU likes theory-heavy questions. Overall, the system works, but it could be way more practical and industry-focused.
