Course Curriculum Overview

3

The first-year curriculum was common for everybody. At that time we were not divided according to branches. We were taught subjects like physics, chemistry, maths, biology, computer programming, Engineering drawing, and English. From the second year onwards we are segregated into our respective departments, where we are mostly taught courses related to our field of study, although we have a few common subjects like maths, business resource management, and electives that are common to all the branches. Honestly speaking, I do not enjoy much studying the core subjects. I feel like the course curriculum isoutdated, we are mostly expected to rote learn and spit the facts in the exam but with the implementation of the new education policy, the curriculum has improved a lot with the introduction of subjects like AI and ML and the option to choose from a diverse range of elective subjects even from a different department. The exams are held twice per semester- midsems of thirty marks and endsems of fifty marks. The difficulty level of the exams is dependent on various factors like the interest of the student, the toughness of the subject, the marking scheme of the professor, etc. Still, I believe that we need to add more subjects that are industry-relevant. Most students anyway prepare for software or analytics roles which have nothing to do with whatever they are taught in class, so anyway they have to put in extra hours to prepare for those roles.

Internships Opportunities

5

A lot of companies come to our campus to offer internship opportunities to students in the domain of Software, data analytics, and core . Most of them also give pre-placement offers to the students. companies like Google, Barclays, Wells Fargo, PWC etc.

Placement Experience

4

I believe that the placements and internships provided by my college are very well above average. Being an institute of national importance and one of the top NITs, our career development cell makes sure to get every student opting to sit for placements, and get a job offer to the best of their abilities. They hold regular sessions on various domains to help us choose one out of them and then guide us to move forward in our chosen domain by helping prepare our resumes giving us resources and making us practice group discussions, aptitude questions, and interviews. Then the internship season starts at the end of the 4th semester as we all do a compulsory internship after our 6th semester. and placement season starts from the end of the 6th semester and continues till the end of the 8th semester. Many of the students who get an on-campus internship offer, get the pre-placement offer after their internships. Companies like Google, Texas Instruments, Oracle, Tata, Accenture, fractal, PWC, ZS etc come to our campus. The highest package is about 98 lpa while the average is 12- 14 lpa across all the branches. more than 90 percent of the students sitting for the placements get placed.

Fees and Financial Aid

For each semester, as a general student with no scholarship benefits fees breakup -: 1. Tuition fees- 62500 2. Hostel seat rent- 5000 3. Mess fess- 20000 4. Exam fees- 5000 5. Student activity center fees-2000 6. Medical fees-2000 7. Establishment fees-5000 People who fall in the category of family income below 5 lakhs per year have a reduction in the tuition fees. SC and St students do not need to pay any tuition fees. Some people also have other government or private-funded scholarships.

Campus Life

5

There are primarily 4 fests in an academic year held in our college: Innovision the technical fest, Nitrutsav the cultural fest, Vriddhi the sports fest and Cosmopolitan the multiethnic fest. many colleges come to participate in these fests. the books and journals are quite accessible. There is a good central library in our college. All the classrooms in the lecture halls have a blackboard and smart board along with a projector. There are 2 stadiums inside the campus, a gymnasium in every hostel, a swimming pool, basketball and tennis courts, and indoor sports in every hostel There are over 50 clubs on campus for different things like coding, poetry dramatics, etc

Hostel Facilities

3

The hostel facility is okay. the boy's hostel is bigger as compared to the girls' hostel. The food served is manageable. sanitation is properly maintained. There is a study room, gymnasium, stationery shop, canteen, etc in every hostel. we also have a well-maintained garden.

Admission

With my rank in JEE Mains, I was getting branches like mining, ceramic, food processing, biomedical engineering, and biotechnology along with integrated MSc courses at NIT Rourkela. I was getting some good branches in other lower NITs and computer science in state government colleges. However, I was not very sure if I really wanted to get into the IT industry or not. I just wanted to get into a good college where I would get a good exposure to explore my interests and passions. With that in mind, I prioritized a better college over a better branch . So thats how I got admission in NIT Rourkela in the ceramic engineering department. I did not chose Biotech or biomed engineering as I did not like biology much and out of others, ceramic seemed to me the better than others. The admission process was quite straightforward. I gave Jee Mains and then applied through JOSAA counseling, I was alloted the seat according to the preference order that i had filled. after which you can either float, slide, or freeze. we had to submit the required documents and an initial amount of money. After this physical reporting to the institute stated where the documents were verified and we were alloted our hostel rooms.

Faculty

4

The faculty in our college are very well qualified. Most of them hold a PhD from some prestigious universities abroad. They are all involved in big research projects and have good industrial ties. This year 25 faculty of our college were placed in the top 2 percent scientists of the world by Stanford University. The faculty-to-student ratio in our department is 1:5 . They give individual attention to every student and are also quite approachable. While many professors are friendly, some are strict as well, especially regarding class tests and class attendance. We have 2 exams per semester. Midsems for 30 marks for each subject and endsems for 50 marks. The rest 20 marks out of 100 marks are internal and are given based on class performance and class tests. Each semester we have 5 theory subjects and 3 practical labs. We have viva and practical exams for our practical subjects and the professors also take regular class tests to assess our performance.

Course Curriculum Overview:

The curriculum is now updated since it became a University, so its more relevant to industry now but still we have to do extra courses for coding. Exams happen every few months—2 internals and one end-sem. They are not very easy, you actually need to study to pass without backlogs
