Best Choice for studying Sciences in UG!

Deshbandhu College is considered as one of the best colleges for studying science in the capital, and my experience is a subjective confirmation of the truth. The Department of Biotechnology (DBT, GOI) has recently announced Deshbandhu College as a 'STAR COLLEGE' (Only Hansraj College of DU has been recognised for the same), which will ensure more funding and research in the institution. The extracurriculars is a feather on the cap of positives of the college. Innumerable outlets around the college serves as a foodie's paradise. Nerds, extraverts and food-lovers have nothing to complain here!

The course curriculum for every course is decided by the university and it can be easily viewed on the official website of DU. For sciences, it is very rigorous and demanding. Science students, especially from Zoology, Botany and Chemistry, have to spend 4 hours in theory classes and 4 hours in practicals every single day, with just one hour of break in between. Classes begin from 8:30 a.m. and go till 5:30 in the evening. In contrast, the commerce and humanities departments are pretty chilled out, with just 4 hours of classes each day, which too may not be held due to leniency, events, etc.

The placements and job opportunities are microscopic here, to be very honest. The administration is least interested in this scenario, and the principal and placement officers do not even inquire about its working. Being a member of the cell for the past 2 years, I have witnessed this disgusting truth prima facie. The students show no interest in building a functional cell, nor does the authority build any connections with companies/alumni. Even though the Facebook page of CYFLE-The Placement Cell, Deshbandhu College is fairly active and posts regularly of internships and job opportunities, no good companies have ever signed up or recruited students due to lack of required skills on part of students and authority involvement in recruitment matters.

1. SABRANG : The annual college fest of the college every year around February-March. Many leading faces of the entertainment industry like Badshah, Neha Kakkar, Shaan, etc. have graced the event. Many competitons in dance, drama, singing, etc. are also accompanied in this 2-day event. 2. Departmental Fests: Every department holds atleast 2 fests in a year in which students from all over Delhi come to participate. 3. Society Fests: There are many societies in the college like Timbre - Music Society, Oculis - Film making society, etc. which also hold their individual annual fest. 4. Diwali Mela: The debut Diwali Mela- Pradeepan, celebrated in 2018, was organised by National Service Scheme (NSS) Deshbandhu College. It was a fantastic amalgamation of food, fun and social service. The college is determined to make it a traditioal celebration, just like in other DU colleges it has always been. 5. AVSAR- Job and Internship Fair: The debut J&I Fair was organised by CYFLE-Placement Cell of the college. Many companies and NGOs were called for selecting students, and it was a huge success. The college is also considering to make it a permanent fest.

The fee structure is feasible for most of the people as it is just around $176 per year. There may be some additional charges taken while registering for university level examinations, but is never more than $30.

There is some scholarship schemes available for students from unprivileged and/or army background. Certain scholarships for Kashmiri migrants and North-east residents may also be provided. However, most people don't qualify for the same. Subject toppers are offered cash prizes during Annual Day, but it is too modest to be considered.

The college is much famous for its extracurriculars - NSS, NCC (Army Wing), Sports, Societies and Competitions. NSS is primarily concerned with social service, and students are offered opportunities to work with NGOs, attend National and Special Camps and provide selfless help to the needy. NCC is very active in college and deals with discipline, military training and unwavering passionate sacrifice for the nation. The Music, Debating and Street-Play Societies are very well known in DU circles to be among the finest. The Film Making Society opened recently, but has immediately gained popularity by acclaiming international prizes. Enactus, Dance, Fashion and Quizzing societies are progressing towards perfection by the day. Overall, the societies are at par with some of the best colleges of DU.

There is no hostel facility available for students of Deshbandhu college. Generally pupils stay in PGs in Govindapuri, which is just a mile away. Since the ROI is not very advantageous, some students prefer Kalkaji and Lajpat Nagar for their stay.

Did you know that Ravish Kumar is an alumni of Deshbandhu College? Well, so are many brilliant minds of this nation like Prabhu Chawla, Shantanu Moitra, Gulshan Kumar, Ajay Dutt and many more. However, the bitter fact is that the alumni connection is not well taken care of by the administration, hence the network is poor and least helpful.

Since Deshbandhu College is a part of Delhi University, cutoffs for the courses are released in June-July. The common application form for all courses comes out in the 3rd or 4th week of May. Based on the cutoffs, the applicant has to approach the college and submit his application form along with X, XII, Transfer and Migration certificates in the subject department he wants to join. Once the certificates have been verified, the candidate needs to pay his fees online, thus reserving a seat for himself.

There is a huge distinction between the faculty of each department, and one must not judge the entire fraternity based on a few professors. The faculty of Botany and Zoology are extremely cool! They are kind, helpful, patient, wise, interactive, and extremely well-read about their subjects (barring a few exceptions). The teachers will treat you as college students, and you can share most of your personal stuff with them, since they are guides and counselors whom you can look up to.
