IGNOU CFL FAQs
Ques. I have no prior knowledge of French. Is the CFL programme suitable for absolute beginners?
Ans. Yes, the CFL programme is specifically designed for absolute beginners with no prior knowledge of French. The programme starts from the very basics - introducing yourself, basic interactions, describing spaces and time - and builds up gradually. The study material is available in both English-French and Hindi-French bilingual formats, so learners from either medium can follow comfortably.
Ques. Is the IGNOU CFL certificate recognised internationally or by French institutions like Alliance Francaise?
Ans. The CFL certificate is awarded by IGNOU, a central university recognised by all AIU member institutions in India. However, it is primarily recognised within India for academic purposes. For international recognition - such as for jobs abroad, study in France, or professional translation roles - you would need internationally standardised certifications like DELF (A1-B2) or DALF (C1-C2). Many students use CFL as a structured foundation and then appear for DELF exams separately to gain international recognition.
Ques. What level of French proficiency does the CFL programme correspond to on the CEFR scale?
Ans. The CFL programme is based on the CEFR framework and is designed to take learners to approximately the A1-A2 level (elementary/beginner). It covers basic conversational French, grammar fundamentals, and functional language skills. Students who wish to progress further can enrol in IGNOU's Diploma in French Language (DFL) and Advanced Diploma in French Language (ADFL) programmes.
Ques. Can I pursue CFL along with another IGNOU programme simultaneously?
Ans. Yes, IGNOU generally permits students to enrol in two programmes simultaneously, provided the programmes are not in conflict with each other in terms of study centre requirements or examination schedules. Language certificate programmes like CFL are commonly pursued alongside other IGNOU degree or diploma programmes. Students should confirm the current policy on the IGNOU admission portal at the time of applying.
Ques. The CFL study material includes audio CDs. What if I don't have a CD player? Is the audio available digitally?
Ans. IGNOU has been progressively making its study material available digitally on the eGyanKosh repository. Students who do not have access to a CD player can check eGyanKosh (egyankosh.ac.in) for digital versions of the audio material. Additionally, IGNOU's online version of the French programme (CFLOL) is available through the IOP portal, which may have digital audio resources. Students are advised to check the latest available resources at the time of enrollment.
Ques. After completing CFL, what career opportunities are available in India?
Ans. The CFL certificate opens entry-level opportunities in sectors where French language skills are valued - such as tourism and hospitality, BPO/customer service for French-speaking clients, embassy and consular support roles, translation and interpretation (at a basic level), and teaching French at school level. For more advanced career opportunities in translation, diplomacy, or working with French multinational companies, students are advised to progress to the Diploma and Advanced Diploma levels and also pursue DELF/DALF certification for internationally recognised proficiency credentials.
