IGNOU COF FAQs
Ques. I am a farmer with only a Class 10 pass. Am I eligible for the COF programme?
Ans. No. The minimum eligibility for COF is Class 12 pass (10+2) or its equivalent. If you have only passed Class 10, you would need to first complete Class 12 or an equivalent qualification before applying. However, if you have passed Class 12 from any stream (arts, science, commerce, or vocational), you are eligible regardless of your marks or age.
Ques. Is the COF certificate from IGNOU recognised for organic farming certification or for applying to government schemes?
Ans. The COF certificate is awarded by IGNOU, which is recognised by all AIU member institutions. However, for official organic certification of your farm produce (e.g., for export or selling as certified organic), you would need to separately apply to an APEDA-accredited certification body. The COF programme educates you about the certification process but does not itself certify your farm as organic.
Ques. Can I do the COF programme entirely online, or do I need to attend any classes?
Ans. The COF is an ODL programme, so there are no mandatory classroom sessions for theory. However, you may need to attend counselling sessions at your assigned study centre for practical/project components. The study material is available in print (dispatched by IGNOU) and digitally on eGyanKosh. Assignments must be submitted before appearing for the Term-End Examination.
Ques. What career opportunities are available after completing COF from IGNOU?
Ans. After completing COF, you can pursue careers as an organic farm manager, organic produce inspector, organic certification consultant, or agricultural extension worker. The programme also supports self-employment - you can start your own organic farm, supply organic produce to local markets or export agencies, or work as a consultant for farmers transitioning to organic methods. Government schemes like PM-KISAN and state organic farming missions also create opportunities for trained organic farming professionals.
Ques. I want to do COF but there is no study centre near my city. What should I do?
Ans. COF is offered at a very large number of ITIs, Jan Shikshan Sansthans, and agricultural institutions across India. You should check the full list of study centres on the IGNOU admission portal (ignouadmission.samarth.edu.in) by selecting COF and your state/region. If no centre is available in your immediate area, you may need to choose the nearest available centre. IGNOU periodically adds new centres, so it is worth checking the latest list at the time of admission.
Ques. Is the COF programme useful for someone who wants to export organic produce? Does it cover export-related topics?
Ans. Yes, the COF programme includes a dedicated course on Economics and Marketing of Organic Produce (BAPI-003), which covers marketing channels, pricing, and export of organic products. It also covers the Inspection and Certification of Organic Produce (BAPI-002), which is directly relevant to understanding the requirements for organic export certification under APEDA's National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP). This makes COF particularly useful for those interested in the organic export market.
