The Certificate in Guidance (CIG) is a professional development programme offered by Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) under its School of Education (SOE), developed as a joint project with the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT). The programme is designed to equip teachers, parents, social workers, and other adults with the knowledge and skills to understand child development, guide elementary school children in learning and socio-emotional development, identify children with special needs, and suggest appropriate intervention strategies. It is a 6-month ODL (Open Distance Learning) certificate programme with 16 credits, extendable up to 2 years, offered in English, Hindi, and Odia mediums. The programme fee is Rs. 2,300 for the full duration. The CIG is one of the most widely available IGNOU certificate programmes, with study centres across virtually all states in India, making it highly accessible for in-service teachers and education professionals.
Admissions to the CIG programme are conducted in two annual cycles - January and July sessions. The January 2026 admission window is currently open, with the last date for fresh admission extended to 31 March 2026. The July 2026 session is expected to open around May-June 2026, with a tentative last date of 31 July 2026, based on previous year patterns.
