IGNOU DDT FAQs
Ques. Is DDT suitable for someone already working in a dairy plant or cooperative?
Ans. Yes, DDT is specifically designed to upgrade the technical proficiency of existing workers and lower-level technicians working in the dairy and allied sectors. The programme covers all aspects of dairy operations from milk procurement to product manufacturing and quality control. Working professionals can pursue this programme through distance learning without interrupting their employment.
Ques. What kind of practical training is included in DDT?
Ans. Each of the 8 courses in DDT has an equal theory and practical component (2 theory credits + 2 practical credits = 4 credits per course). The practical training covers milk testing, dairy equipment operation, milk processing techniques, manufacture of dairy products (butter, cheese, ice cream, indigenous products), quality assurance testing, and dairy management operations. Students must attend practical sessions at their designated study centre, which is typically a dairy plant, agricultural university, or food technology institute.
Ques. What are the career opportunities after completing DDT?
Ans. Graduates can work as secretary of dairy cooperative society, milk procurement supervisor, milk tester, dairy plant operator/technician/supervisor, product technician (ice cream/cheese/butter/indigenous dairy products), dairy assistant, chilling centre supervisor, quality control assistant, packaging assistant, marketing assistant, distribution assistant, retail supervisor, store assistant, extension assistant, and trainer. Self-employment opportunities include becoming a milk contractor, transporter, dairy products manufacturer, owner of milk parlour/milk booth/ice cream parlour, wholesale distributor, retailer, and exporter of milk and milk products.
Ques. Is DDT recognised by the dairy industry and government dairy departments?
Ans. Yes, DDT was developed with the support of the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Government of India, which gives it strong industry recognition. The programme is designed to meet the workforce requirements of the dairy industry and is recognised by all AIU member institutions. Graduates are well-positioned for entry-level and mid-level positions in dairy cooperatives, state dairy departments, and private dairy companies.
Ques. Can someone without a 10+2 qualification enroll in DDT?
Ans. Candidates who have passed Class 10 but not 10+2 can enroll simultaneously for IGNOU's Basic Preparatory Programme (BPP) and DDT. The BPP is a bridge programme that allows Class 10 pass students to pursue diploma-level programmes. This provision makes DDT accessible to dairy workers and rural youth who may not have completed higher secondary education.
Ques. How is the practical examination conducted for DDT?
Ans. Practical examinations are conducted at the designated study centre (typically a dairy plant, agricultural university, or food technology institute). Students are evaluated on their ability to perform dairy operations, quality testing, and product manufacturing. A practical record/journal must be maintained throughout the programme and submitted for evaluation. Students must attend all practical sessions as scheduled by the study centre.
