IGNOU DTG FAQs

Ques. What is the minimum German language level required for DTG admission?

Ans. Candidates must have German language knowledge at B1 level as per the Common European Framework of References for Languages (CEFR). This is equivalent to the Goethe-Zertifikat B1 or equivalent certification. Candidates who have studied German at the university level or have equivalent proficiency are also eligible. You do not need to be a native German speaker, but you must be able to communicate in German at an intermediate level.

Ques. Is DTG offered in July session as well?

Ans. No. DTG is offered ONLY ONCE A YEAR for the January session. There is no July session for this programme. If you miss the January session admission window, you will need to wait for the next January cycle. The programme duration is one year (minimum), with a maximum of 3 years to complete.

Ques. What is the practical component (DTG-4) in the programme?

Ans. DTG-4 (Lesson Planning, Preparation and Evaluation) carries 10 credits and is the most substantial course in the programme. It focuses on practical classroom teaching experience. Students are required to prepare and complete several sessions of classroom teaching at their respective schools or study centres. This practical component is what distinguishes DTG from purely theoretical language programmes and makes it a genuine teacher training diploma.

Ques. Are contact classes mandatory for DTG? How are they conducted?

Ans. Yes, contact classes are an integral part of the DTG programme. They provide students the opportunity to speak German, interact with tutors and fellow learners, share teaching experiences, and build a network of German teachers across India. Contact classes are conducted at the designated study centres (IGNOU Regional Centres). The schedule is communicated by the respective Regional Centre after admission.

Ques. I am a German language teacher at a private school. Will DTG help me get a better job or salary?

Ans. Yes. DTG is the first professionally recognised German teacher training diploma in India, developed in collaboration with Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan and the University of Vienna. Completing DTG demonstrates professional competence in teaching German as a foreign language, which is valued by PASCH schools, Goethe-Institut partner schools, CBSE/ICSE schools offering German, and private language institutes. It can significantly enhance your professional credibility and career prospects.

Ques. Can I pursue DTG if I have a B.Sc. or B.Com. degree instead of a B.A.?

Ans. The official eligibility states a B.A. degree with B1 level German proficiency. However, IGNOU's general policy recognises equivalent qualifications. Candidates with B.Sc. or B.Com. degrees who have the required German language proficiency should contact the IGNOU School of Foreign Languages (SOFL) directly at vikassingh@ignou.ac.in or Ph. 011-29571638 to clarify their eligibility before applying.
