NIT Surat: Students' Opinion

AI-Generated Summary based on 48 Reviews

Admission to the National Institute of Technology (NIT) relies on JEE Mains scores and State Board scores, with seat allocation administered by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA). The JEE Mains exam, held annually in April, determines eligibility for subsequent admission processes. Successful candidates proceed to the Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) program, which offers seats at IITs, NITs, IIITs, and other government colleges. The seat allocation occurs in June, and the academic session starts by the end of July.

From over a million JEE Mains participants, around 200,000 qualify for JEE Advanced, and roughly 10,000 secure IIT seats. The faculty at NIT is diverse, with Mechanical and Electrical Engineering departments noted for experienced faculty, though teaching methods require improvement. The student-to-faculty ratio is about 1:40. The exam structure includes mid-semester and end-semester exams, quizzes, and lab practicals, with moderate-to-difficult assessments. The BTech fee is approximately 10 lakh over four years, with tuition fees at 62,500 per semester.

SC/ST students receive full tuition waivers, while those from families earning under 5 lakh enjoy partial fee remission. Hostel fees are 45,000 annually, with additional costs for amenities. The placement scenario is favorable, with average packages between 8-12 LPA and top offers reaching 80 LPA. Placement rates range from 70-90%, with Computer Science and Electronics & Communication graduates often receiving higher packages. Top recruiters include Amazon, Google, and Microsoft. Internships, starting from the third year, are integral, with companies like JP Morgan and L&T offering stipends from 10,000 to 100,000 INR per month.

Numerous scholarships and fee remission options are available for financially disadvantaged students. Families earning less than 1 lakh annually get a full tuition waiver, while those earning between 1 and 5 lakhs receive two-thirds fee remission. The total cost for a 4-year BTech program ranges from 7 to 8 lakhs. However, scholarship opportunities for general category students are limited, and the fees are considered high for a government institution.

An integrated MSc. from SVNIT will be beneficial for your future as NITs are the second most revered engineering colleges in our country. Chasing one’s dream is a good idea, but one must also be aware of our future prospects. SVNIT is a good choice in terms of placements.

Some of my friends who graduated from SVNIT know of their batchmates who received job offers of around 30 LPA from foreign recruiters. Even Indian organizations pay SVNIT graduates handsomely, but the foreign offers are higher.

Ultimately, it is you who has to make the most of the available opportunities. Thus, I would recommend you join SVNIT for an integrated MSc.
