MAHE B.Des FAQs

Ques. Why is there such a large fee difference between Fashion and Interior Design versus other B.Des specializations at MAHE Manipal?

Ans. The fee structure reflects the infrastructure and software investment for each specialization. Fashion and Interior Design operate from studio-based setups, while specializations like Creative and Applied Computation, Human Centered Design, and System Design involve specialized computing labs, UX research infrastructure, and software licensing that raise the cost considerably. MAHE classifies these as premium design-technology tracks. If you are budget-constrained, Fashion Design at INR 9.82L or Interior Design at INR 10.54L are the more accessible options.

Ques. How does the MAHE B.Des Lateral Entry programme work and who qualifies?

Ans. The Lateral Entry programme allows students with a 3-year diploma in design from a recognized polytechnic or design institute to enter B.Des at the second year level. This reduces the duration from 4 years to 2 years at lower total fees: INR 7.39L for Fashion Design Lateral and INR 7.57L for Interior Design Lateral. It is a recognized pathway for diploma holders who want a full degree qualification without repeating foundational design coursework.

Ques. Is Human Centered Design at MAHE Manipal relevant for UX and product design careers in tech?

Ans. Yes. Human Centered Design covers user research methods, interaction design, prototyping, and design systems, all of which are sought-after in product companies. HCD graduates commonly target UX Researcher, Product Designer, and Interaction Designer roles at companies like Flipkart, Swiggy, and global firms hiring in India. It is one of the more employable B.Des specializations at MAHE if you are specifically targeting the tech and startup sector.

Ques. How does MET compare with NID DAT and NIFT entrance test in terms of preparation?

Ans. These are distinct exams with different demands. MET tests general aptitude, English, and analytical reasoning, with no design-specific drawing or portfolio component. NID DAT has two stages: a written test on design thinking and creativity, followed by a studio test assessing drawing and spatial visualization. NIFT Entrance Test similarly includes creative aptitude and design thinking sections. If you are targeting NID or NIFT, you need separate focused preparation beyond MET readiness.

Ques. What are realistic career outcomes for B.Des graduates from MAHE Manipal across specializations?

Ans. Career outcomes vary by track. Fashion Design graduates enter apparel brands and export houses. Interior Design graduates work with architecture firms, furniture brands, and hospitality chains. Visual Communication graduates find roles in advertising, brand design, and packaging studios. Human Centered Design and System Design graduates target UX and product design roles in tech. MAHE’s campus placement extends design opportunities through its broad corporate network, though dedicated design-sector placement is less structured than at NID or NIFT.
