BHU MFA FAQs
Ques. How does BHU MFA differ from a fine arts diploma at a state art school?
Ans. BHU MFA is a postgraduate degree awarded by a NAAC A++ accredited central university, recognized across India for academic employment and doctoral research. State art school diplomas are often awarded by state boards or autonomous bodies and may not have equivalent recognition for NET eligibility or college lectureship posts. BHU MFA holders can directly apply for UGC-NET in Fine Arts, which qualifies them for assistant professor positions in art colleges and university departments that diploma holders cannot access.
Ques. What career paths do BHU MFA graduates in Ceramic and Glass Design typically pursue?
Ans. BHU MFA Ceramic and Glass Design graduates work as studio potters, ceramic designers for dinnerware and architectural tile manufacturers, craft entrepreneurs, art teachers, and museum conservators. The Varanasi region has an active terracotta and pottery craft belt in the surrounding districts, providing local apprenticeship contexts. Graduates also enter government design craft centers, export promotion councils like EPCH, and art-in-residence programs funded by the Lalit Kala Akademi. Some pursue academic careers by clearing UGC-NET in Fine Arts after completing their degree.
Ques. Does the Varanasi location specifically benefit BHU MFA students or is it a disadvantage?
Ans. Varanasi is a living laboratory for MFA students in Textile, Applied Arts, and Ceramic specializations. The city’s Banarasi silk weaving tradition, Gulabi Minakari metalwork, and terracotta craft clusters provide research and collaboration opportunities that no metro campus can replicate. For Painting students, Varanasi’s ghats, cultural festivals, and diverse visual environment offer rich source material. The disadvantage is limited access to the contemporary art market, commercial gallery circuits, and advertising agencies that Delhi or Mumbai campuses provide.
Ques. Can BHU MFA graduates pursue a PhD in Fine Arts and what are the pathways?
Ans. Yes. BHU MFA graduates with 55% marks and a valid UGC-NET JRF or UGC-NET without JRF are eligible for PhD admission at BHU through the departmental research entrance process. BHU also has a direct PhD pathway for candidates with JRF who score above the department’s interview threshold. PhD in Fine Arts at BHU leads to a tenure-track lectureship or research positions at cultural bodies like the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, Lalit Kala Akademi, and National Museum Institute.
Ques. What studio infrastructure does BHU Faculty of Visual Arts provide to MFA students?
Ans. BHU Faculty of Visual Arts operates dedicated studios for each specialization, including painting studios with model rooms, a ceramic studio with electric and gas-fired kilns, a glass studio, screen printing and block printing units for textile students, and commercial art labs for applied arts. The faculty has a reference library with art history and design texts and a slide archive of Indian and international art. Students also have access to the broader BHU library system, which holds significant art history and architectural heritage collections.
