University of Texas at Austin PG Requirements for Indian Applicants
- Academic: Four-year bachelor’s degree with CGPA 7.5/10 or 75% (recommended); STEM programmes prefer 8.0/10
- English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 79 or IELTS Academic 6.5 or Duolingo 115; India-medium bachelor’s holders qualify for waiver

University of Texas at Austin Acceptance Rate 2027
UT Austin’s overall acceptance rate stands at 26.6% based on the most recent Common Data Set. Indian applicants compete in the out-of-state pool with an acceptance rate closer to 11.76%, since the Texas Top 10 Percent Law reserves roughly 90% of first-year seats for Texas residents.
| Year | Overall Acceptance Rate | Out-of-State Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Fall 2024 | 26.6% | 11.76% |
| Fall 2023 | 29% (estimated) | 13% (estimated) |
| Fall 2022 | 31% (estimated) | 15% (estimated) |
[Source: UT Austin Common Data Set 2024-2025]
The out-of-state acceptance rate under 12% places UT Austin in the highly selective bracket for international applicants. For competitive tracks like Computer Science and Business Honors, effective admit rates fall further into single digits.
Reality check: Indian applicants targeting UT Austin should treat it as a reach-selective school rather than a safety, since the out-of-state pool draws high-scoring domestic and international applicants competing for a capped share of first-year seats.

UT Austin also ranks #20 among US universities on the QS 2026 list and holds top-10 US subject positions in Petroleum Engineering, Accounting and Latin American Studies.
Key insight: UT Austin’s sub-100 QS position keeps it eligible for the Indian government’s LRS scholarship pool and matches employer recognition thresholds set by most Indian and multinational recruiters hiring US-degree candidates.
University of Texas at Austin Placements and Career Outcomes 2027
UT Austin graduates report strong placement outcomes across engineering, business and computer science, with Austin’s Silicon Hills tech scene providing direct recruiting pipelines.
- McCombs MBA employment (3 months post-graduation): 92% (estimated, Class of 2024)
- McCombs MBA median base salary: $158,000 (₹1.51 crore) (2024 median, estimated)
- MS Computer Science median starting salary: $130,000 to $160,000 (₹1.24 crore to ₹1.53 crore) (estimated market range)
- Top recruiters: Google, Amazon, Meta, Apple, Dell, IBM, Deloitte, McKinsey, Goldman Sachs, ExxonMobil (representative list)
- Career support: Texas Career Engagement office plus McCombs, Cockrell and CNS career centres
- OPT and STEM extension: 12 months standard OPT plus 24-month STEM extension for eligible programmes
Insider note: Indian MS graduates cluster in Austin, Bay Area and Seattle roles, with H1B sponsorship rates among the highest in the US for STEM tracks at UT Austin because of the university’s Fortune-500 recruiter pipeline.
University of Texas at Austin vs Peer Universities
Indian applicants often compare UT Austin with peer flagships offering similar Fall intake, STEM strength and moderate US metro living costs.
| University | QS Rank 2027 | Avg Annual PG Fee (USD) | Avg Annual PG Fee (INR lakh) | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| University of Texas at Austin | #72 | $25,000 to $63,500 (estimated) | 23.9 to 60.6 lakh (estimated) | STEM strength plus Austin tech corridor |
| Purdue University | #95 (estimated) | $32,000 to $40,000 (estimated) | 30.6 to 38.2 lakh (estimated) | Engineering depth at lower cost |
| University of Michigan Ann Arbor | #44 (estimated) | $55,000 to $65,000 (estimated) | 52.5 to 62.1 lakh (estimated) | Higher-ranked but pricier |
| Georgia Tech | #77 (estimated) | $32,000 to $40,000 (estimated) | 30.6 to 38.2 lakh (estimated) | Peer CS depth with lower tuition |
| Texas A&M University | #155 (estimated) | $28,000 to $38,000 (estimated) | 26.7 to 36.3 lakh (estimated) | In-state Texas alternative |
UT Austin stands out for its combination of top-100 global ranking, direct recruiting from Austin-headquartered tech giants and a graduate cost structure lower than most East and West Coast flagships.
Indian applicants targeting long-term Austin tech careers find UT Austin uniquely positioned, since Dell, IBM, Meta, Google and Tesla operate major Austin offices with active UT hiring pipelines.
UT Austin fits Indian applicants who want a research-intensive public flagship with strong STEM and business tracks, moderate US metro living costs and a clear route into US tech and finance employers. A two-year MS runs ₹95 lakh to ₹1.25 crore all-in, offset by a median STEM starting salary of ₹1.24 crore that recovers investment within two to three years on OPT (see study in USA visa pathway).
UT Austin is not the right pick for applicants targeting the absolute top-50 QS bracket, aggressive scholarship stacking, or Ivy-tier alumni networks. Indian candidates prioritising ranking alone should shortlist University of Michigan Ann Arbor as a realistic higher-ranked alternative.

Ques. Can Indian students get an IELTS waiver at UT Austin?
Ans. Yes. India appears on UT Austin’s English-exempt country list, so Indian applicants whose bachelor’s or Class 12 was taught in English can request a formal TOEFL and IELTS waiver. Ques. Does UT Austin accept Indian 3-year bachelor’s degrees?
Ans. UT Austin generally requires a 4-year bachelor’s for graduate admission. Indian applicants with 3-year BA, BCom or BSc degrees usually need a master’s degree or a postgraduate diploma to be considered equivalent. Certain professional programmes evaluate case by case, so applicants should confirm with the department before applying.
Ques. Which Indian education loan lenders finance UT Austin admits?
Ans. Major Indian lenders including HDFC Credila, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, SBI, Prodigy Finance and MPower Financing regularly finance UT Austin admits. Ques. Can Indian students apply for Spring intake at UT Austin?
Ans. Spring intake is available at UT Austin for undergraduate freshmen (September 1 deadline) and select graduate departments. Not all departments accept Spring admissions, and Fall remains the primary cycle for financial aid and assistantship consideration. Ans. GRE requirements vary by department. Cockrell School of Engineering programmes and MS Computer Science have moved to test-optional or test-flexible policies for Fall 2027, though strong GRE scores still strengthen an application. - The focus on technical aspects as compared to what I had in India
- The classmates that I have also come from top colleges(both in the US and India)
- The Alumni Network is so strong, you just need to put in one message to get a referral to the company they are working for
Dislikes
- The fees of the college are higher when compared to colleges like the University of Buffalo for the same program(Masters in Business Analytics)
- You cannot buy insurance from a private company which ends up costing 3 times more for insurance then the colleges that allow for private company insurance
- The subjects that you want are always on a first come first serve basis and also the registration pops up without any specific notice, which catches you off-guard, and sometimes you miss a subject of your liking

- The fees is charged semester-wise for my prograM
