An advanced version of PPE has been developed by the Researchers of Department of Textile and Fibre Engineering at IIT Delhi. The PPE designed is breathable and light-weighted.
It is developed by Head of the Department Professor Dr. SM Ishtiaque, PhD student Biswa Ranjan Das, Scientist 'D' and Assistant Director of DMSRDE (DRDO), Kanpur.
The researchers consulted more than 150 doctors and came up with a common issue that PPE already in use are uncomfortable to wear.
Keeping that in mind, the researchers developed more breathable and also safe PPE. There is a minimum requirement of 3.5 kPa (kilopascals) but the newly developed PPE has the property of 15 kPa.
In comparison to the other PPEs weighing 400-450 grams, these PPE weigh 300 grams. The fabric used is very soft which is way more comfortable and light. Not only this, the PPEs are reusable and can be washed twice, which lowers the cost of purchase by three times.
These PPEs are priced at INR 905 (including GST). Given the option to reuse, it would cost around INR 300 for one time use.
Dr. Ishtiaque said,"We have covered all the basic aspects and it meets the criteria specified by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. It is free of bacteria or virus penetration. Our PPE is equipped to cover 99.8% bacteria."
The professor claimed that he himself wore the PPE for 5 hours without any issue. However, the feedback from the doctors is still awaited.
