Class 10 Science Chapter 2 Acids, Bases & Salts – Important Topics

Acid: Acid is a substance that donates protons or accepts a pair of valence electrons to form a bond. Acid changes blue litmus into red. It has a pH less than 7.

Bases: A base is a substance that can accept protons or donate a pair of valence electrons to form a bond. Bases turn red litmus into blue. It has a pH above 7.

Salt: Salt is a substance produced by the reaction of an acid with a base.

pH or Power of Hydrogen of any solution can be determined by using pH paper. 

Examples of Acid include Sulphuric acid, Hydrochloric acid, Nitric acid, Acetic acid.

Examples of bases include Sodium hydroxide, Potassium hydroxide, Ammonium Bicarbonate.

Salt formation: When acid and base combines, salt is formed.

NaOH + HCl → NaCl + H2O

Importance of pH:

  • Acidic food causes tooth decay.
  • Acid is produced in fatigued muscles.
  • Some animals and plants contain acids in them.
  • Tarnished copper vessel can be restored using acid.
  • pH of soil is vital for plant growth.
