Nelson Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom is a brief extract from the Autobiography of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela.
The story depicts the unforgiving struggle of the black population in South Africa to achieve freedom. Nelson Mandela, former and first Black President of South Africa, took oath on 10th May 1994 after over three centuries of White tyranny.
The prose shows his historic inauguration in the Union Buildings amphitheatre in Pretoria as the first Black President of South Africa, commenting forward his thoughts on far-fetched freedom.
In his speech, he mentioned his obligation toward the people of his country and his family. He addressed his dedication towards the newborn freedom his country received.
The author addressed how mistreated his country members were and believed equality was necessary, despite race, caste, gender or color.
Nelson Mandela believed that every person, regardless of ethnicity or colour, should be able to receive political emancipation.
He shared his thoughts upon joining the African National Congress, helping him transform from his meek personality to a rebellious young man fighting against racial prejudice.
The day he took the oath was further symbolised by playing two National Anthems. While the white population sang “Nkosi Sikelel”, the blacks sang “Die Stem”. These helped form the old anthems of the Republic.
This lesson teaches how courage prevails, regardless of color, creed or gender. Nelson Mandela’s historic inauguration still remains fresh as a memory as South Africa brought freedom through their first Black President.
