Reducing agent is a substance that loses electrons to other substances in a redox reaction and is oxidised to a higher valency state.

  • One of the reactants in an oxidation-reduction reaction is a reducing agent, which reduces the other reactant by releasing electrons.
  • The reduction process cannot take place if the reducing agent does not pass electrons to other substances in the reaction.
  • Reduction occurs when oxygen atoms are lost and electrons and hydrogen are gained.
  • Oxidation is the process of gaining oxygen while losing electrons and hydrogen.
  • As a result, when an element is oxidised, its oxidation state increases, but when it is reduced, the oxidation state drops.

  • In a redox chemical reaction, it oxidises itself.
  • As a result, the reducing agent reduces others while losing electrons and becomes oxidised.
  • Reducing agents have low electronegativity and low ionisation energies because they lose electrons so frequently.

  • Reducing agents have a tendency to give electrons away.
  • The periodic table's s-block metals are known to be good reducing agents.
  • After losing electrons, the reducing agent oxidized, causing the opposite reactant to be reduced by giving electrons.
  • All good reducing agents contain atoms with low electronegativity and high ability of an atom or molecule in order to attract bonding electrons, including species with low ionization energies.

The weaker the oxidising agent, the stronger the corresponding reducing agent.

  • In a redox reaction, one species loses electrons (gets oxidized) while another gains them (gets reduced).
  • The tendency of a species to lose electrons, making it a reducing agent, is inversely proportional to the tendency of another species to gain electrons, making it an oxidizing agent.
  • Fluorine gas is a powerful oxidising agent, whereas F-  is a weak reducing agent.

Metals like Na, Fe, Zn, and Al, as well as non-metals like C, S, and H2, are common reducing agents. Some compounds and hydracids, such as HCl, HI, HBr, and H2S, are effective reducers.

Lithium

Lithium is a chemical element with the symbol Li and an atomic number of 3. It belongs to the alkali metal group of the periodic table and appears as a soft, silvery-white metal. When used in solutions, it is believed to be a powerful reducing agent.

Iodine 

Iodides are weak reducing agents, as per their salts. Iodine is produced when it reacts with oxygen. These have a variety of antioxidant characteristics as well.

Reducing sugars

Due to the presence of a free ketone group or a free aldehyde group, reducing sugars have similar behavior as reducing agents. Reducing sugars include all monosaccharides, as well as disaccharides, polysaccharides, and oligosaccharides.
