Sedimentary rocks are the types of rock formed by the accumulation or deposition of mineral or organic particles at the surface of the earth, followed by cementation. 

  • Sedimentation refers to the mechanisms that lead these particles to settle in place. 
  • Sedimentary rocks are made up of particles that are either geological detritus (minerals) or biological detritus (organic substances). 
  • Weathering and erosion of existing rocks, or the solidification of molten lava blobs released by volcanoes, produced the geological minerals
  • Water, wind, ice, or mass movement convey geological minerals to the site of deposition, which is referred to as an agent of denudation. 
  • Biological detritus is formed by the bodies and parts (mostly shells) of dead aquatic creatures hanging in the water and slowly accumulating on the floor of water bodies (marine snow). 
  • Sedimentation can also occur when dissolved minerals precipitate from a solution of water.

Rocks are mineral aggregates that have qualities from all mineral traces. Rock types can be defined by any unique combination of chemical composition, mineralogy, grain size, texture, or other distinguishing properties.

There are three types of rocks:

  • Igneous Rocks: Igneous rock is formed when magma or lava cools and solidifies.
  • Sedimentary Rocks: Sedimentary rocks are formed by the deposition and subsequent cementation of material in bodies of water and on the earth's surface.
  • Metamorphic Rocks: Metamorphic rocks formed just by existing deep beneath the Earth's surface, subjected to extreme temperatures and the immense pressure exerted by the rock layers above it.
