The force constant, commonly known as the Spring Constant, is the parameter that determines the stiffness of a spring. 

  • It is based on Newton's Third Law of Motion, which states that "for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction." 
  • Hooke's law, which states that "the restoring force of the spring is directly proportional to the small displacement," defines the relationship between this restoring force and displacement. 
  • The constant proportionality is referred to as the Spring Constant. N/m (Newton per meter) is the SI unit for the spring constant.
  • Helical springs are often referred to as coil springs. 
  • It is a mechanical spring made of a wire turned into a coil that resembles a screw thread. Helical Springs can push, pull, and carry weights. 
  • Torsion or twisted helical springs are commonly employed in hinges and engine starters.
