Metre Bridge, commonly known as the slide wire bridge, is a device that works on the balanced Wheatstone bridge principle.
- A meter bridge is constructed by using a 1 m wire with a uniform cross-sectional area stretched tightly and clamped between two thick metallic strips bent at right angles with two gaps to connect resistors across.
- A key is used for connecting the clamped endpoints of the wire to a cell.
- A galvanometer is attached to the metallic strip halfway between the two gaps at one end.
- The galvanometer's opposite end is attached to a jockey, which travels along the wire to form an electrical connection.
- A standard known resistance R is connected across one of the gaps. An unknown resistance S is connected across the opposite gap.
The meter bridge works on the principle of the Wheatstone Bridge. At balance condition:

The sensitivity of the meter bridge is maximum when the resistances of all the arms of the bridge are almost the same.
