Tranquilizer, the term first used by F. F. Yonkman in 1953, refers to a drug which was designed for the treatment of anxiety, tension, fear, and other disturbances of mind, in order to reduce state of anxiety and tension. Tranquilizers are central nervous system depressants that bring about a calming effect and induce mild sedative effects. Most of these drugs are derivatives of Barbituric acid-like Veronal, Mytal, Nembutal, Luminal, Seconal.

They are designed for the treatment of:

  • Anxiety
  • Tension
  • Agitation
  • Fear
  • Disturbances in the mind

Specifically, to reduce states of anxiety and stress.

Major Tranquilizers

Drugs that are used to reduce psychic symptoms. These are also called neuroleptics which were developed to treat psychiatric disorders like schizophrenia. Moreover, these drugs also combat hallucinations and other delusions and are usually prescribed for long terms. The major tranquilizers include:

The drug is used to treat mild symptoms of anxiety, tension or neurons. These are also known as anxiolytics which are used for sedation and to treat anxiety. Nowadays, these drugs are called anti anxiety medications.

  • It is used as an antipsychotic agent

Examples of Tranquilizers

Tranquilizers come in a variety of forms. They operate following their mechanisms.

Non-adrenaline, for example, is one of the neurotransmitters involved in mood swings. If the non-adrenaline level is low, the person will experience depression because the signal sending activity is reduced. In the aforementioned situation, antidepressant medications are required. Antidepressants work by inhibiting the enzymes that catalyse the breakdown of noradrenaline. 

When the enzymes are inhibited, this neurotransmitter is slowly metabolised, allowing it to activate its receptor for longer periods and counteracting the effect of depression. This class of drugs includes iproniazid and phenelzine.

For example, to alleviate anxiety, we use tranquilizers such as chlordiazepoxide and meprobamate. In addition, Equanil is used to control hypertension and depression.

Antiseptics

The person under the dose of tranquilizers will be aware of its surroundings although it does not appear to care. The person under the dose of sedatives are generally unaware of their surroundings.
