A substance is a matter having specific composition and properties. It includes each pure element or compound. All matter in nature can be classified either as a substance or a mixture. Examples of substances include – 

  • Water molecule
  • Oxygen element

Types of Substances

Pure substances are classified into two forms – elements and compounds.

  • Elements are composed of just a type of atom, either by itself or bonded together forming a molecule.
  • Compounds are molecules formed of two simpler substances.

Some of the properties of substances are – 

  • A pure substance has a definite mass and volume.
  • It is formed of just one state of matter.
  • A substance is made up of atoms or molecules.
