Zinc Iodide is prepared in laboratories by the reaction of zinc with iodine in water or refluxing ether. The chemical reaction is given as,

Zn + I→ ZnI2

  • It can also be prepared by the reaction of zinc with iodine in an aqueous solution.
  • Zinc iodide is also prepared by adding zinc powder to a solution of iodine in ethanol and an exothermic reaction takes place. A solution of zinc iodide is obtained from which zinc iodide can be obtained by evaporating the solvent.

In the crystal form of zinc iodide, zinc centres are tetrahedrally coordinated. The group of four of the zinc tetrahedra shares three vertices to form “super-tetrahedra” of composition with the formula, [Zn4I10]. They are linked via vertices and form a 3-D structure.

The gaseous state, zinc iodide possesses a linear shape in accordance with the VSEPR Theory. In an aqueous state, it forms a tetrahedral structure in the case of ZnI2.(H2O2).

Sample Questions

Ques. What is the zinc iodide formula? (2 marks)

Ans. The zinc iodide formula is the chemical way of representing zinc iodide using symbols of the elements. In this case, the elements are zinc, whose symbol is, Zn and iodine with symbol I2 Therefore, the formula for zinc iodide is written as ZnI2.

Ques. What is the physical appearance of zinc iodide? (1 mark)

Ans. Zinc iodide is white granular salt, which upon exposure to light and atmosphere turns brown due to the liberation of iodine.

Ques. Is zinc iodide a toxic compound? (2 marks)

Ans. Zinc iodide is toxic in nature but its toxicity is directly related to the route of exposure and the degree of exposure. When exposed for long hours and long term, it can develop lethal lung diseases. Ingestion of zinc iodide is not highly dangerous, it is poisonous but long-term recovery can be made.

Ques. What is zinc iodide used for? (2 marks)

Ans. Zinc iodide is a Lewis acid and hence is used as a catalyst in the catalytic conversion of methanol to triptane and hexamethylbenzene. Another use of zinc iodide is in industrial radiography as an X-Ray opaque penetrant in to improve damage and intact composite contrast of the X-Ray.

Ques. Walculate the molecular mass of zinc iodide. (3 marks)

Ans. The molecular mass of zinc iodide can be calculated by multiplying the number of atoms with the atomic mass of the element and adding the mass of all the elements present in the molecule.

The atomic mass of zinc= 65.38amu

Atomic mass of iodine= 126.904

Atomic mass of two zinc molecules= 2*126.904= 253.808

Thus, the molecular mass of zinc iodide= Atomic mass of zinc+ 2* Atomic mass of iodine

= 65.38 + 253.808 = 319.188amu

Ques. Write the chemical equation for the preparation of 8 grams of zinc iodide. (2 marks)

Ans. Zinc iodide is prepared by the reaction of zinc with iodine in water or refluxing ether. Another method to prepare zinc iodide is by the reaction of zinc with iodine in an aqueous solution. The chemical equation for the reaction is given as,

Zn + I2→ ZnI2

Ques. How many moles of atoms are contained in 1.905 kg of zinc iodide? (3 marks)

Ans. Given,

Mass of zinc iodide= 1.905kg= 1905 grams

Molecular mass of zinc= 319.19 g/mol

Number of moles is calculated as,

n= given mass/ molecular mass

n= m/M

n = 1905/319.19

n= 5.968 moles

Therefore, 1.905 kg of zinc iodide contains 5.968 moles.
