The Court turns down PGPM aspirant’s plea that IIM-Ahmedabad's 50% weightage to interview created arbitrariness.

On Tuesday, Gujarat High Court dismissed a plea filed by a student questioning the weightage given to personal interview in the total score for admission to the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A).
While rejecting the appeal, the Court noted, "It must be borne in mind that the candidate's Emotional Quotient is more relevant than the Intellect Quotient for admission to IIM, Ahmedabad."
The petition filed by Raghav Gupta has mentioned that as per the latest judgment of the Supreme Court, any education institute cannot give weightage of score of the personal interview (PI) beyond 15% as it creates arbitrariness.
In the case of IIMA, it was 50 per cent of PI, while the weighting of the CAT score was 25 per cent, which should be higher.
Gupta applied for the Post Graduate Program in Management (PGPM) for the term 2020-21.
The court's order said, "The CAT score does assess the intellect of an applicant to such an extent that the final selection process is based on other qualifications that are important for the career advancement of a professional. The selection process/admission process of the institute can not, therefore, be faulty, because it can be seen that IIMA provides studies in higher education which can not be compared to graduate degrees because the course offered involves the overall creation of the applicant.
The court acknowledged the point put forward by Nandish Chudgar, IIM-A counsel, that, "What comes to the foray is that the policy of admission of the respondent IIM, Ahmedabad, is in the public domain at the time of the commencement of the admission process.
The course offered by IIM-A is not just a technical degree course.
In the meantime, the court has ordered the institution to keep one seat vacant until 4 August, as it plans to file an appeal against the order.
