IIT Delhi: 575 Answered Questions

Can I get IIT Delhi with 4000 rank in JEE Advanced?

Kapil Bahl

4000 JEE Advanced rank and IIT Delhi — nuanced answer:

at 4000 general category rank, IIT Delhi mainstream branches are closed:

  • CSE, ECE, EE, Mech, Chemical, Civil at IIT Delhi — all close in the range of 50–600 for general. 4000 rank won't get these
  • what might open at 4000 at IIT Delhi: Maths & Computing, Engineering Physics, Textile Technology, Production & Industrial Engineering — these close in the 3,000–5,000 range some years. marginal, check latest JoSAA data

better targets at 4000 general JEE Advanced:

  • IIT Roorkee — Chemical, Civil Engineering likely
  • IIT Guwahati — ECE, EE, Chemical might open
  • IIT BHU (Varanasi) — CSE, ECE, EE available
  • IIT Dhanbad/ISM — CSE, ECE
  • Newer IITs — CSE/ECE easily

check the exact closing ranks on josaa.admissions.nic.in for JoSAA 2024 — the Maths & Computing program at IIT Delhi is your best shot. if interdisciplinary programs interest you (like Maths & Computing), it's worth applying. if you want core engineering branches, focus on IIT Roorkee/Guwahati/BHU at 4000 general.

Should I go for B.Tech Electrical Engineering Power and Automation in IIT Delhi or B.Tech Manufacturing Science and Engineering in IIT Kharagpur?

BouncingBantam

Without any nonsense, it really doesn’t matter what you choose. At the end of your B.Tech, you’ll likely have two options:

  • If you stay in India, you’ll probably pursue an MBA, UPSC, or IT.
  • If you aim to go abroad for research or an MS, keep in mind that no research or corporate job is possible without a taste of Computer Science.

The good news is that by choosing B.Tech in Electrical Engineering Power and Automation at IIT Delhi, you can easily transition into CS after your B.Tech and prepare for an MS abroad. Electrical Engineering at IIT is quite flexible and offers a wide variety of courses that touch on many aspects of modern engineering, including Electronics, Computer Science, and Modern Physics. These courses will definitely help you refine your career choices later on.

Which one should I opt for IIT Delhi B.Tech Textile Technology or IIT Kharagpur B.Tech Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering

CeruleanCyborg

IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Textile Technology offers a solid curriculum with a good work-life balance, but when it comes to placements and internships, IIT Kharagpur's B.Tech in Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering clearly takes the lead. Kharagpur boasts an impressive placement record with more than 90% of students getting placed, and companies like Amazon and Google actively recruiting, while Delhi's stats, although good, seem to lag a bit behind. The average package at Kharagpur is also significantly higher, making it a more attractive option for those focused on immediate job prospects. If you're leaning towards a high-paying job in tech, IIT Kharagpur is the better choice, while IIT Delhi might suit those interested in a balanced lifestyle and alternative career paths.

Should I go for B.Tech Computer Science Engineering in IIT Delhi or B.Tech Industrial Engineering in IIT Kharagpur?

HastyHare

IIT Delhi.

Reasons include:

  • Better professors.
  • Higher calibre of your future batchmates.
  • Superior placement opportunities (trust me, many multinational corporations like Samsung Korea and Rubrik U.S. don’t visit IIT Kharagpur, but they frequently come to IIT Delhi to hire students for internships and placements).
  • More opportunities for pursuing further studies at top-tier international universities.

Additionally, IIT Delhi is situated in the heart of Delhi (specifically South Delhi) and is conveniently close to the Delhi airport. There are plenty of restaurants, malls, theatres, and bars to enjoy during weekends.

In contrast, the nearest city to IIT Kharagpur is Kolkata, which is about 140 km away. The closest decent restaurant to IIT Kharagpur is a Domino’s outlet, and it doesn’t even deliver pizzas inside the campus.

Also, while I usually don’t put much stock in QS Rankings, you can rely on them when they rank IIT Delhi higher than IIT Kharagpur.

Cheers!

Which one should I opt for IIT Delhi B.Tech Electrical Engineering or IIT Kharagpur B.Tech + M.Tech Chemical Engineering

UnseenUtility

The choice between IIT Delhi B.Tech in Electrical Engineering and IIT Kharagpur B.Tech + M.Tech in Chemical Engineering really hinges on your interests and location preferences.

  • Placement-wise, IIT KGP in Electrical Engineering is a stronger option. There are numerous core jobs as well as opportunities in CS. Plus, there's significant scope in consulting and finance. The growth potential is tremendous if you choose this path.
  • But remember, there's no such thing as a free lunch. You need to put in the effort to seize these opportunities. If you're not ready to study hard after getting into IIT, these prospects won't mean much.
  • On the flip side, if you have a genuine passion for Chemical Engineering, opting for IIT Delhi makes sense. The placements for Chemical students are excellent, but again, hard work is essential here too.
  • If you're considering entrepreneurship, UPSC CSE, CAT, etc., then IIT Delhi is the way to go.

I hope this helps clarify your decision! All the best! :)

Which one should I opt for IIT Delhi B.Tech Computer Science Engineering or IIT Kharagpur B.Tech + M.Tech Mechanical Engineering

BlazingBeam

IIT Delhi's B.Tech in Computer Science Engineering offers a strong edge when it comes to placements and internships, with big names like Amazon and Google actively recruiting students. The curriculum is designed to prepare you for real-world applications, and the abundant internship opportunities can significantly boost your resume. In contrast, IIT Kharagpur's B.Tech + M.Tech in Mechanical Engineering, while prestigious, may not provide the same level of direct tech industry exposure or immediate job prospects in the booming fields of AI and ML.

If you're leaning towards a career in tech, IIT Delhi is likely the better choice for higher-paying job prospects, while IIT Kharagpur could be ideal if you're passionate about mechanical engineering and prefer a dual degree.

Which one should I opt for IIT Delhi B.Tech Electrical Engineering Power and Automation or IIT Kharagpur B.Tech Metallurgical and Materials Engineering

WackyWeasel

If you're getting admission to Electrical Engineering at IIT Delhi, placements shouldn't even be a concern. Even students from textile engineering secure great placements. It’s IIT DELHI! Power and Automation is a solid branch. There will be plenty of opportunities to explore other minors and electives. After four years, if you still want to enter core electrical or software companies (most B.Tech graduates end up in analyst, consulting, finance, etc.), you’ll have ample opportunities. Trust me, you won’t regret this choice!

Should I go for B.Tech Electrical Engineering in IIT Delhi or B.Tech Civil Engineering in IIT Kharagpur?

EphemeralUmbra

IIT Delhi for B.Tech in Electrical Engineering definitely has an edge in terms of placements and internship opportunities compared to IIT Kharagpur's Civil Engineering. With around 88% of students getting placed and companies like Google and Samsung recruiting, the prospects seem brighter at IIT Delhi, especially in tech-driven roles. While IIT Kharagpur has its strengths, the student-faculty ratio and the teaching quality seem to be less favorable, which could affect the overall learning experience. If you're aiming for a career in tech or electrical fields, IIT Delhi is the better choice; however, if you're passionate about civil engineering and want to explore a different avenue, IIT Kharagpur is still a solid option.

Mar 3, 2026 15:44

Admission to IITs through JEE Advanced with 17 marks is almost impossible, as cutoff scores are usually much higher, even for reserved categories. You may not qualify for rank or counselling. However, you can consider preparing again, taking a drop year, or exploring NITs, IIITs, state engineering colleges, or private universities.
