IIT Delhi M.S. BEB FAQs
Ques. What is the M.S. in Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology at IIT Delhi?
Ans. The M.S. in Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology (BEB) at IIT Delhi is a two-year, research-based postgraduate programme offered by the BEB department. It is distinct from the M.Tech. in that it is heavily oriented towards original research, with students spending most of their time on a thesis project rather than taught courses. Graduates of the BEB M.S. programme often proceed to Ph.D. programmes in India or abroad, or move into biopharma R&D roles at companies such as Biocon, Dr. Reddy’s, and Serum Institute of India.
Ques. Is COAP used for admission to the M.S. BEB programme at IIT Delhi?
Ans. No. Unlike the M.Tech. programme, the M.S. in Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology at IIT Delhi does not use the COAP (Common Offer Acceptance Portal) for admissions. Admission is through a direct departmental written test and interview, conducted by the BEB Research Committee on campus from May 19 to 22, 2026. Candidates apply through the IIT Delhi admissions portal, are shortlisted based on GATE score and academic record, and are then called for the interview.
Ques. What GATE paper is required for the M.S. BEB programme at IIT Delhi?
Ans. The primary qualifying GATE paper for the M.S. in Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology at IIT Delhi is BT (Biotechnology). The BEB Research Committee may also consider candidates with a valid XL (Life Sciences) GATE score depending on the candidate’s academic background and the available research projects. IIT graduates with a B.Tech. or B.E. CGPA of 8.0 or above in a relevant discipline may apply without a GATE score under the GATE exemption provision.
Ques. What research areas can M.S. students pursue in the BEB department at IIT Delhi?
Ans. Research areas in the BEB department at IIT Delhi include biopharmaceutical manufacturing and downstream processing, microbial biotechnology and fermentation engineering, enzyme engineering and metabolic pathway design, biosensors and point-of-care diagnostics, biopolymer synthesis, and cancer biology. The department has three DBT-funded Centres of Excellence covering biopharmaceuticals, microbial designer polymers, and cancer research. M.S. scholars are attached to a faculty supervisor and work within one of these research groups on a project-specific thesis topic.
Ques. What is the Teaching Assistantship amount for M.S. students at IIT Delhi BEB?
Ans. GATE-qualified M.S. students at IIT Delhi receive a Teaching Assistantship of INR 12,400 per month for the duration of the two-year programme. This assistantship covers a significant portion of the annual programme fee of INR 1,90,500. SC/ST and PwD students are additionally exempt from paying the tuition component of the fee. Students enrolled in DBT-funded research projects at BEB may also be eligible for project fellowships that supplement the standard Teaching Assistantship.
Ques. What career paths do IIT Delhi M.S. BEB graduates typically pursue?
Ans. Graduates of the M.S. in Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology from IIT Delhi typically pursue careers in biopharmaceutical process development, biotech startup founding, or doctoral research at leading universities in India and abroad. Major recruiters include Biocon Biologics, Syngene International, Novozymes India, Pfizer, and public sector labs such as CSIR-IMTECH and DBT-THSTI. Many graduates use the IIT Delhi M.S. as a stepping stone to Ph.D. admission at institutions such as MIT, ETH Zurich, NUS Singapore, and IISc Bangalore.
