Cornell Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
Cornell admission requirements for Indian students combine an academic threshold, an English test, and standardised tests where required by the field.
PG Requirements
- Academic: Bachelor’s degree with CGPA 7.5/10 to 8.5/10 (recommended) depending on programme; Johnson MBA expects 7.5+, MS Computer Science expects 8.5+
- English test: TOEFL iBT 100 with section minimums (Writing 20, Listening 15, Reading 20, Speaking 22) or IELTS Academic 7.0 overall
- Credential verification: WES ICAP evaluation accepted for most Cornell fields; APS is not required for the US
- Standardised tests: GRE required for most MS programmes and waived for select MEng tracks; GMAT/GRE required for Johnson MBA
UG Requirements
- Academic: Class 12 with 90% to 95% (recommended) from CBSE, ICSE, or state boards; strong performance in relevant subjects (PCM for Engineering, PCB for Biology)
- English test: TOEFL iBT 100 or IELTS 7.0; SAT/ACT is test-optional through Fall 2027
Key insight: Cornell accepts IELTS 7.0 with no sub-score minimum, unlike TOEFL which enforces four section floors. Indian applicants with weak speaking or listening bands find IELTS the safer route to meet the language requirement.
Cornell University Acceptance Rate 2027
Cornell University’s most recent published undergraduate acceptance rate is 7.3%. Graduate acceptance rates vary widely by field: Johnson MBA sits near 20% (estimated) and MS Computer Science and Cornell Tech MEng CS admit below 12% (estimated) of applicants. These figures are reliable for planning; departmental variation is significant.
| Year | Undergraduate Acceptance Rate | Trend |
|---|---|---|
| Class of 2026 | 7.3% | Historical low |
| Class of 2025 | 8.7% | Down from 10.9% |
| Class of 2024 | 10.9% | Steady |
[Source: Cornell University Admissions Office]
Indian applicants face additional competition inside the international pool, where Cornell admits under 3% of applicants at the undergraduate level. Graduate MEng and MSBA cohorts are more welcoming, with Indian students often forming 25% to 40% of intake.
Reality check: A 7.3% overall rate is misleading for Indian graduate applicants. Focus on programme-level admission signals: GRE/GMAT medians, undergraduate CGPA distribution, and past-year Indian intake published on each department’s admissions page.

|---|---|---|
| Accommodation (shared off-campus) | 800 to 1,200 | 76,000 to 1,14,000 |
| Food and groceries | 400 to 500 | 38,000 to 48,000 |
| Transportation | 60 to 100 | 5,700 to 9,500 |
| Books and supplies | 100 to 150 | 9,500 to 14,300 |
| Personal and health | 300 to 400 | 28,500 to 38,000 |
| Total monthly | 1,660 to 2,350 | 1.58 to 2.24 lakh |
| Annual (10 months) | 16,600 to 23,500 | 15.8 to 22.4 lakh |
[Source: Cornell International Services official cost estimate 2026-2027]
Insider note: One-bedroom rent in Ithaca averages USD 1,194 (INR 1.14 lakh) per month, but Indian graduate students typically share 2 or 3-bedroom houses in Collegetown or East Hill, cutting the individual rent to USD 700 to 900 (INR 66,600 to 85,600).
Cornell University Campus, Facilities and Student Life
Cornell’s main campus sits on 745 acres above Cayuga Lake in Ithaca, New York, roughly 4 hours north of New York City by road. A second campus, Cornell Tech, occupies Roosevelt Island in NYC.
- Location and transport: Ithaca is served by the Ithaca Tompkins Regional Airport with connections to Newark and Detroit; TCAT buses cover the campus and city
- Housing: Cornell offers 3 graduate housing complexes; roughly 60% (estimated) of graduate students live off-campus in Collegetown
- Notable facility: The Cornell University Library system holds over 8 million volumes across 20 libraries, including Mann and Uris
- Indian community: Cornell Indian Association and student groups from Cornell Tech run cultural events, Diwali celebrations, and airport pickups for new arrivals
What Indian students say: The Ithaca winters are long and cold, but the compact campus makes daily life manageable. Cornell Tech students report a very different experience: living in NYC, most placements within walking distance of Manhattan tech offices, and higher weekly costs.
Cornell University Scholarships 2027
Cornell provides need-based aid and merit fellowships across programmes. Named scholarships specifically for Indian nationals are limited; most Indian graduate students access field-specific fellowships and departmental assistantships.
| Scholarship | Type | Award Value | Eligibility | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cornell Need-Based Aid (Undergraduate) | Need-based | Full tuition possible | Admitted UG with CSS Profile | Same as admission deadline |
| Johnson Merit Scholarships | Merit | Partial to full tuition | Automatic review for MBA applicants | Round 1 for best consideration |
| Tata Scholarship at Cornell | Need-based, India-specific | Full financial need coverage | Indian UG applicants with demonstrated need | Same as UG admission deadline |
| Graduate Field Fellowships | Merit / research | Tuition and stipend | PhD and select MS/MEng candidates | Verify at Cornell Graduate School |
| Teaching and Research Assistantships | Work-based | Tuition waiver and stipend | Post-admission departmental award | Post-enrolment |
[Source: Cornell Financial Aid Office, Cornell Graduate School 2026-2027]
Planning note: The Tata Scholarship is one of the few dedicated Indian-national awards at Cornell and covers full demonstrated financial need for undergraduates. It has no separate application; admitted Indian students who submit the CSS Profile are automatically considered.

Cornell also holds #3 globally for Veterinary Science (QS Subject 2025) and Collegedunia Study Abroad Computer Science #14 globally (#8 USA). Its THE Business and Economics rank is #16 (2026) and Computer Science is #17.
Key insight: A top-20 QS rank matters for Indian applicants beyond prestige. Ivy League ranking anchors visa officer confidence for the F-1 interview, and Indian employers still weight top-20 US degrees heavily in laterals from US-based recruiters.

Cornell University Placements and Career Outcomes 2027
Cornell publishes strong placement outcomes across its Johnson MBA, Cornell Tech, and Engineering programmes, with Indian graduates recruited into US technology, consulting, and finance.
- Johnson MBA employment (3 months post-graduation): 93% for the most recent published class
- Median Johnson MBA starting salary: USD 175,000 (INR 166.5 lakh) base plus signing bonus (market median)
- Cornell Tech MEng median starting salary: USD 145,000 (INR 138.0 lakh) (market median for CS at Cornell Tech)
- Top recruiter sectors: Technology (Amazon, Google, Meta), management consulting (McKinsey, BCG, Bain), and investment banking (Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan) — sectors representative of Cornell recruiting
- Career support: Cornell Career Services, Johnson Career Management Center, and Cornell Tech Career Services offer resume review, mock interviews, and one-on-one coaching
- Post-study work: STEM-designated MEng, MS, and MSBA degrees qualify for 36 months OPT under the STEM extension
Insider note: Cornell Tech’s Roosevelt Island location gives Indian CS graduates direct access to NYC tech and finance recruiting. The Cornell Ithaca engineering pipeline is stronger for research and PhD roles; NYC and West Coast tech pipelines are stronger from Cornell Tech.
Cornell University vs Peer Universities
Cornell compares against the Ivy League peer set and top private US research universities. The table shows QS 2027 ranks, Collegedunia Study Abroad ranks where available, and 2026-2027 published master’s tuition ranges.
| University | QS World 2027 | Avg Annual PG Fee (USD) | Avg Annual PG Fee (INR lakh) | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cornell University | #16 | 71,266 to 89,864 | 67.8 to 85.5 lakh | Ivy League with STEM Cornell Tech in NYC |
| Columbia University | #20 (market) | 60,000 to 82,000 (estimated) | 57.1 to 78.0 lakh | NYC location, strong finance recruiting |
| University of Pennsylvania (Wharton) | #12 (market) | 70,000 to 88,000 (estimated) | 66.6 to 83.7 lakh | Top-2 US business school |
| Yale University | #22 (market) | 65,000 to 82,000 (estimated) | 61.9 to 78.0 lakh | Liberal arts and law strength |
| IIT Bombay | #134 | 3,000 to 4,000 | 2.9 to 3.8 lakh | Domestic anchor, lowest cost |
| IIT Delhi | #118 | 3,000 to 4,000 | 2.9 to 3.8 lakh | Domestic anchor, strong CS |
Cornell stands out among Ivies because Cornell Tech places graduates directly into NYC tech recruiting, and its Johnson MBA sits inside a strong US MBA market. Against IITs, Cornell adds a US work-visa pathway that domestic degrees cannot match.
Cornell is the practical Ivy pick for Indian STEM applicants who want ranking prestige and NYC job access without Columbia’s higher living costs.
Cornell University is a strong fit for Indian applicants planning US careers in technology, analytics, or MBA-track consulting and banking. Total investment of INR 165 to 220 lakh across a 2-year MBA or MSBA plus living costs is anchored by a median MBA salary of INR 166.5 lakh, offering an ROI window within 2 to 3 years post-graduation. The 36-month STEM OPT pathway is the strongest single reason to choose Cornell Engineering or Cornell Tech.
Cornell is not the right choice for Indian applicants prioritising a lower-cost US degree or a warmer city; Ithaca winters are severe and the total sticker price sits above USD 250,000 for MBA. Applicants weighing cost should consider University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign for engineering.
FAQs
Ques. Does Cornell University accept Indian students without GRE?
Ans. Cornell waives GRE for several MEng programmes at Cornell Tech and for Johnson MBA (which requires GMAT or GRE). Cornell Tech CS, Engineering Management, and select Ithaca MEng tracks accept applications without GRE. MS research degrees in most Cornell Engineering fields still require GRE. Check the specific programme page under Cornell Graduate School before choosing to skip the test.
Ques. How much does the Cornell application fee cost for Indian applicants?
Ans. Cornell charges a graduate application fee of USD 105 (INR 10,000) per programme. Fee waivers are available for Indian applicants who demonstrate significant financial hardship or are participants in specific US-based diversity programmes. Waiver requests must be submitted at least 4 weeks before the programme deadline, using the graduate school waiver form, and require supporting documentation.
Ques. Can Indian students work part-time at Cornell University?
Ans. F-1 visa holders at Cornell can work up to 20 hours per week on-campus during term time and 40 hours per week during official breaks. Common on-campus roles include library assistant, dining services, teaching assistant, and research assistant positions. Off-campus work requires Curricular Practical Training or Optional Practical Training authorisation from Cornell International Services.
Ques. Which Cornell programmes are STEM-designated for Indian graduates?
Ans. All Cornell Tech MEng programmes, MS Computer Science, MSBA (Business Analytics), MEng Engineering Management, MS Operations Research, MPS Applied Statistics, and most Cornell Engineering MS and PhD programmes carry STEM designation. This qualifies Indian graduates for the 24-month OPT STEM extension, giving 36 months of post-study work authorisation total, which improves H-1B lottery odds substantially.
Ques. Are there Indian education loans available for Cornell University?
Ans. Cornell is on the approved list for major Indian education lenders including HDFC Credila, Avanse, Prodigy Finance, MPOWER Financing, and Bank of Baroda. Loan amounts up to INR 1.5 crore are available for Cornell MBA and MS programmes, often without collateral for MBA applicants. Prodigy Finance and MPOWER offer no-cosigner USD-denominated loans specifically for Indian students at Cornell.
Ques. Does Cornell accept the IELTS Indicator or online TOEFL for Indian applicants?
Ans. Cornell Graduate School accepts TOEFL iBT and IELTS Academic as its two standard tests. The online IELTS Academic is accepted at par with the in-person test. Duolingo English Test is accepted for select programmes but not universally across all Cornell fields. Applicants should check the specific programme’s international admissions page, since some fields (Engineering, Business) publish tighter test policies.
Ques. What documents does Cornell require for transcript verification from India?
Ans. Cornell accepts official transcripts uploaded to the application portal at the review stage, and originals or WES ICAP evaluations are required only after admission for enrolment. Indian applicants should send transcripts in sealed envelopes from their university’s controller of examinations. WES evaluation takes 4 to 6 weeks, so Indian applicants should start the process 8 weeks before the application deadline.
Ques. Is Cornell Tech in New York City the same as Cornell University Ithaca?
Ans. Cornell Tech and Cornell University Ithaca are the same institution, sharing accreditation, rankings, and the Cornell University degree. Cornell Tech operates the Roosevelt Island campus in New York City for graduate programmes in Computer Science, Engineering, and Information Science. Indian applicants apply directly to Cornell Tech for its MEng and dual-degree programmes; the degree awarded carries the Cornell University name.

- Some professors would overload us with work so it gets really stressful
- I don't like the fact that its very far away from NYC so I miss out on some networking events
- There could be more stress relieving activities due to the amount of stress because of finals and prelims

These include cultural clubs (e.g., Cornell India Association, Asian Pacific Americans for Action), pre-professional societies (e.g., Consulting Club, Women in Computing at Cornell (WICC)), engineering project teams, and debate societies.
Fees
- The fees charged are semester-wise; hostel is usually about $7000 for a semester, tuition is about $34,000, a dining hall meal plan is about $3000, health insurance is about $2000 and activity fees are about $200. My monthly expenses are around $75-100, which is spent mostly on food at restaurants around campus with friends or online shopping (I only go out 2-3 times in a month roughly). I use the free bus pass for transportation and rent is included in semester fees.

Overview
Program ranked in top 10 in the US. Ivy league school. Shorter duration of masters program. Best Engineering school in the Ivy league.
Campus Life
Campus life is decent, but since I planned to graduate in 1 year I did not explore all the options. There are various activities and events happening on campus regularly and if someone wants to engage in such activities you will find plenty of opportunities.
Overview
More credits/focus assigned to research. At least a third of the total credits for graduation were assigned for research which was my primary area of interest.
Campus Life
Good news for students is that there is Wifi everywhere. Many sports clubs are there with me myself being a part of the badminton team. Research infrastructure is too good particularly the DeFrees hydraulic laboratory where I have conducted experiments.
Overview
1. Small cohort 2. Brand name 3. One of the best program I wanted to pursue.
Campus Life
Cornell is an Ivy league and hence there are no doubts of sports facilities. There are ton of clubs to join. I am part of Cornell Cricket Club and at the same time was part of Cornell Graduate Consulting Club where I served a local client for revenue models and competitor analysis. Ton of extra curricular activities to choose as well.
Overview
Prestige and ranking(overall and department). It is an Ivy school and ranked in the top 10 in the US for my program.
Fees
$60000 is the program fee.
Overview
I ended up choosing Cornell mainly due to two Professors here (Jie Shan and Peter McMahon). Their research interests aligned really well with mine. Another, although minor, factor that affected my decision was the availability of many hiking trails in Ithaca. I really enjoy trekking and hiking, so that was a major plus.
Fees
The Ph.D program in physics costs a total of $75,000 per year (including the stipend, health insurance, etc.). The tuition alone is about $30,000. Although, almost no one ever pays for their doctorate education. You're almost always offered a fellowship, TAship, or RAship.
Overview
A great network to be able to be successful in the future, allows me to extensively train for the career I want. Has a good social climate to be able to enjoy myself when I need a break from the tough work.
Fees
They charge over $30,000 but provide very good financial aid. They help with tuition. Require expenses to be paid for.
Overview
It's the leading program in this field and I couldn't find it anywhere else. Very detailed and good instruction at Cornell's ILR School in Ithaca, NY about 4 hours from New York City. There are plenty of resources.
Fees
They charge a very large amount of money for tuition. The tuition is very expensive and perhaps unaffordable. They charge more money for tuition than most other schools, especially New York State schools.
