Georgia Tech announced a new Online Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence on October 6, 2026. The degree opens a lower-cost US pathway for Indian working professionals who cannot relocate. The University System of Georgia’s Board of Regents approved the programme for a Fall 2027 launch. It extends the model that made the institute’s online computing degree the largest of its kind in the country.
- The new OMS AI degree will offer six concentrations: AI in Business, Decision-Support AI, Foundations of AI Theory, Health AI, Human-AI Interactions, and Predictive AI.
- Every student must finish an AI practicum with a company or organisation, applying classroom methods to a real workplace problem.
- Georgia Tech separately received a $5 million Google.org grant on October 9, 2026 to train 300+ researchers and seed 15 AI research projects over three years.
Program sign-ups for Fall 2027 application updates are already live on the Georgia Tech Professional Education site. The twin October announcements pair a new online degree with a research investment aimed at scaling AI tools across US campuses.

What Georgia Tech Confirmed on October 6, 2026
Provost Raheem Beyah framed the degree as a tool to help students "understand, apply, and lead with AI". The announcement names Executive Vice Provost for Education Larry Jacobs and President Ángel Cabrera as programme sponsors. The Board of Regents cleared the proposal before the public release. Georgia Tech has not yet disclosed tuition, admission tests, or the application deadline for the first intake.
The current Georgia Tech OMSCS degree gives Indian applicants a reference point for cost and format. The institute’s existing online computing master’s charges roughly $10,000 in total tuition, far below the $40,000 to $81,000 annual cost at on-campus US AI programmes reported for Indian applicants.
Key Caveat: The announcement does not confirm tuition, GRE policy, or the deadline for Fall 2027. Treat tuition parity with OMSCS as a reasonable expectation, not a promise, until Georgia Tech publishes the fee schedule.
Six Concentrations and the AI Practicum Requirement
Each OMS AI student picks a focus track alongside the common AI core. The six initial concentrations target the industries that hire the most AI talent in India and the US.
| Concentration | Who it fits |
|---|---|
| AI in Business | Analysts and PMs moving into AI product roles |
| Decision-Support AI | Operations, consulting, risk and policy workers |
| Foundations of AI Theory | Engineers planning a PhD or research track |
| Health AI | Doctors, pharma analysts, medical device engineers |
| Human-AI Interactions | Designers, HCI researchers, UX leads |
| Predictive AI | Data scientists and ML engineers in industry |
The required practicum ties every concentration to live work. Indian students working at TCS, Infosys, Fractal, or any employer can run the practicum inside their own company. That removes the biggest objection to US online degrees, that they lack real project exposure.
What the $5 Million Google.org Grant Funds
Google.org committed $5 million over three years, with $2.25 million for the first year. The money sits with Georgia Tech’s Institute for Data Engineering and Science (IDEaS) and the Center for AI in Science and Engineering. The initiative will build 15 AI research tools and support 30 additional research teams across US universities.
At ₹88 per USD, the grant is worth about ₹44 crore. The money will train 300+ researchers and faculty on the Nexus AI supercomputer, an NSF-funded machine hosted at Georgia Tech. Tim Lieuwen, Executive Vice President for Research, said the award targets researchers at historically underfunded institutions. 25 to 30 institutions are expected to actively use the shared AI tools by the end of the three-year window.

Why This Matters for Indian STEM Students
Indian students send more applicants to US computer science and AI programmes than any other country. On-campus AI master’s degrees in the US cost Indian students between ₹38 lakh and ₹76 lakh in tuition alone, before living expenses. A fully online Georgia Tech option removes relocation, F-1 visa friction, and most of the loan burden.
What it means for Indian Students: The OMS AI degree does not create STEM OPT eligibility, because online students do not hold an F-1 visa. The pay-off is a Georgia Tech degree and skills, not a US work permit. Treat it as a career move inside India or at a global employer, not an immigration route.
How Do Indian Students Apply for Fall 2027?
Georgia Tech is collecting email sign-ups on the OMS AI page. Formal application details, including deadlines, tests, and tuition, will land in the months before Fall 2027. The OMSCS pattern suggests a mid-2027 deadline for an August 2027 start, but Georgia Tech has not confirmed those dates.
Action Plan for Indian Applicants
- Register for Fall 2027 updates on the Georgia Tech Professional Education page today.
- Shortlist one of the six concentrations against your current job function.
- Line up three recommenders in advance, including one from your current manager.
- Confirm with your employer whether the AI practicum can run inside your company.
- Track the OMSCS-style $10,000 benchmark for budgeting, and keep an INR buffer of 20% for FX swings.
The next six months will decide whether Indian AI aspirants have a genuine Georgia Tech option without moving abroad. The Fall 2027 intake is now the single most important US online AI date on the calendar. Formal application rules will drop before mid-2027, and the sign-up list is the only official channel so far.
Keep an Eye On: Georgia Tech is expected to release the OMS AI tuition, deadline, and admission rules in the months leading up to the Fall 2027 intake. Signing up for the official updates list before mid-2027 is the only way to catch the application window on day one.
