The UGC cleared Illinois Institute of Technology’s Mumbai campus on July 14, 2026. Indian students can now earn a US degree without leaving Mumbai. It is the first US institution to award American degrees in India. The September 2026 intake covers eight programmes at 30 seats each.

  • Applications for the Fall 2026 cohort close on August 31, 2026.
  • BS tuition is ₹18 lakh per year; MS and MBA fees are ₹20 lakh per year.
  • Merit scholarships cut 10 to 20 percent off tuition. SAT scores are optional.

The approval opens a third path for families weighing US degrees. Students can study in Chicago, defer, or enrol in Mumbai. Students admitted here receive the same US-accredited Illinois Tech degree.

What Illinois Tech Mumbai Offers in September 2026

The campus launches with eight programmes across BS, MS and MBA tracks. Each cohort caps at 30 seats for 2026. Faculty include professors from the Illinois Institute of Technology Chicago parent campus.

Programme Level Duration
BS Artificial Intelligence Undergraduate 4 years
BS Computer Science Undergraduate 4 years
BS Business and Information Technology Undergraduate 4 years
BS Business Administration Undergraduate 4 years
MS Artificial Intelligence Postgraduate 2 years
MS Computer Science Postgraduate 2 years
MS Data Science Postgraduate 2 years
MBA Postgraduate 2 years

Mallik Sundharam, Illinois Tech Vice President, called it a "transformative milestone in global higher education". Classes begin in September 2026 at the Godrej Business District in Vikhroli, Mumbai.

How Much Illinois Tech Mumbai Costs Indian Students

Annual tuition at Mumbai is ₹18 lakh for the four BS programmes. MS and MBA tracks are priced at ₹20 lakh per year. A full BS degree costs around ₹72 lakh over four years. A two-year MS or MBA lands at roughly ₹40 lakh in tuition.

What it means for Indian Students: A four-year BS in Chicago typically crosses ₹1 crore once tuition, USD living costs and dollar rates are added. Mumbai removes the F-1 visa, US rent and dollar tuition from the bill.

Merit scholarships trim 10 to 20 percent off tuition. That is ₹1.8 lakh to ₹3.6 lakh yearly for BS applicants. MS candidates can shave ₹2 lakh to ₹4 lakh per year. The application fee is ₹5,000, waived if the submission landed before July 31, 2026.

Who Can Apply and What Indian Students Need

The undergraduate track is open to Class 12 completers from recognised Indian and international boards. STEM programmes recommend four years of mathematics through precalculus. Four years of science with physics and four years of English are also advised.

  • SAT and ACT scores are optional. Illinois Tech Mumbai reviews applications holistically.
  • English is proven via TOEFL 80+, IELTS 6.5+, or Duolingo 115+. Waivers apply for some qualifications.
  • Applicants must submit official Class 10 and Class 12 transcripts. A live admissions interview follows.

Up to three letters of recommendation are accepted. The 2023 admitted profile at Chicago averaged a GPA of 4.12 and SAT of 1340 on the STEM track. Indian applicants can use that as a benchmark.

How Do Indian Students Apply Before August 31?

Applications run through the Illinois Tech admissions portal. Every step must be complete before 11:59pm IST on August 31, 2026. The interview stage is scheduled after materials are received.

Key Caveat: Scholarship deadlines are set separately from admission deadlines. Applicants chasing the merit award should confirm the aid cut-off before locking in their submission date.

What the UGC Approval Signals for Study-Abroad Plans

The clearance reshapes the top of the US-degree funnel. Students who missed Fall 2026 US intakes now have a Mumbai option. A denied F-1 applicant can also pivot to the Indian campus. Credit transfer to Chicago is part of the design.

Bristol got UGC approval on June 9, 2026 for its Powai campus. Both approvals prove the UGC 2023 framework is working in practice. More foreign campuses may open admissions next cycle.

The 30-seat cap makes competition sharper than the Chicago intake. Indian applicants who apply late in August will face fewer scholarship slots. The August 31, 2026 deadline compresses an entire admissions cycle into four weeks.

Indian applicants targeting Illinois Tech’s US degree now have a domestic route. The August 31, 2026 deadline is the immediate wall. Classes start a fortnight later at Godrej Business District. Missing it pushes candidates to the Spring 2027 intake.

Action Plan for August 2026 Applicants

  1. Create an Illinois Tech account and start the online application today.
  2. Upload Class 10 and Class 12 transcripts and your English-proficiency score.
  3. Book the admissions interview once your materials are received.
  4. Pay the ₹5,000 fee, or claim the waiver if you filed before July 31.
  5. Track your scholarship decision separately on the Tuition and Aid page.

What Happens Next for Illinois Tech Mumbai Applicants: Classes begin in September 2026 at the Godrej Business District. Applicants who miss August 31 should watch for the next Spring 2027 window on the admissions portal.
