The University of Aberdeen has UGC’s final nod for its Mumbai campus. Indian students can enrol for the university’s September 2026 inaugural intake. India’s University Grants Commission issued the Letter of Approval on July 28, 2026. Aberdeen becomes the first Scottish university cleared to teach on Indian soil.
- Applications are live on the official abdn.ac.uk/mumbai portal for the first cohort.
- UG degrees cover Business Management, Computing Science and Data Science; PG options are Artificial Intelligence and the MBA.
- Principal Peter Edwards called the approval "a significant milestone" in the Aberdeen 2040 strategy, per the university announcement.
The launch adds another UK name to India’s growing list of foreign branch campuses. It gives Indian students a route to a British degree without a Tier 4 visa.

What Aberdeen Mumbai Will Offer From September 2026
The inaugural intake spans five degrees across two levels. Aberdeen has confirmed the following mix on its official news page.
| Level | Programme |
|---|---|
| Undergraduate | Business Management |
| Undergraduate | Computing Science |
| Undergraduate | Data Science |
| Postgraduate | Artificial Intelligence |
| Postgraduate | Master of Business Administration |
Every degree will be awarded by the University of Aberdeen in Scotland. Aberdeen is one of the ancient Scottish universities and sits inside the QS World Top 250. This is the first Scottish licence issued under the UGC’s foreign campus framework.
Key Insight: Aberdeen has not yet published Mumbai tuition. International fees at the Scotland campus start near £20,800 a year, or about ₹22 lakh at ₹106 per pound. Watch the Mumbai fee page before committing.
Aberdeen UK vs Aberdeen Mumbai: The Trade Off
The Mumbai option strips out the heaviest cost lines of a UK degree. There is no visa, no airfare, no UK rent. It also removes the annual IHS health surcharge of £1,092 per year. But it also removes the post-study work benefits tied to time in the UK.
Students weighing the two campuses should compare four points.
- Degree parity: Aberdeen states the Mumbai award will match the Scotland award.
- Faculty mix: Indian branch campuses of foreign universities usually blend home and local faculty.
- Work rights: A Mumbai graduate does not get the two-year UK Graduate Route visa.
- Total spend: A Mumbai year is expected to sit well below the roughly ₹45 lakh full cost of a year in Aberdeen, Scotland.
Key Caveat: A Mumbai-issued Aberdeen degree does not carry UK post-study work rights. If your target is a UK job or an ILR pathway, the Scotland campus remains the correct route.

Where Aberdeen Fits in India’s Foreign University Push
Aberdeen joins a lengthening list of overseas universities cleared since the UGC rules opened in 2023. Southampton, Deakin and Wollongong are already teaching Indian cohorts. Aberdeen is the first Scottish entrant to the market.
The UGC’s foreign campus rules let approved universities set their own fees. They can admit students directly and issue degrees valid in both India and the home country. The rules are the operational arm of the National Education Policy 2020.
How Do Indian Students Apply for Aberdeen Mumbai?
Applications are open on the university’s Mumbai portal from July 28, 2026. Aberdeen has not set fixed application rounds for the inaugural intake. Early submission is the safer play for a September start.
- Open abdn.ac.uk/mumbai and pick your programme.
- Check the entry criteria, including the English test score required.
- Ready your Class 12 marksheet for UG or a graduation transcript for PG.
- Draft a statement of purpose and line up two references.
- Submit the online form and track the decision by email.
The University of Aberdeen Admissions 2026 for Indian Students page carries the current Scotland entry benchmarks. The Mumbai team is expected to mirror those thresholds for its first cohort.
Aberdeen has moved from consultation to a live intake in under a year. Indian students now have a UK branded degree available at Indian prices from September 2026. The tuition table and the intake close date are both due on the official Mumbai page before term begins.
