JEE Advanced 2027 eligibility requires ranking among the top 2,50,000 in JEE Main 2027, being born on or after October 1, 2002 (general category), and having first appeared in Class 12 in 2026 or 2027.

JEE Advanced is the second stage of the IIT admission process, conducted by one of the seven zonal IITs in rotation. The Joint Admission Board (JAB) enforces five eligibility conditions that every student must satisfy simultaneously. Missing even one condition makes you ineligible, regardless of your JEE Main rank.

  • Only the top 2,50,000 rank holders across all categories in JEE Main 2027 qualify for JEE Advanced 2027.
  • Age limit: born on or after October 1, 2002 (general/OBC-NCL/EWS); born on or after October 1, 1997 (SC/ST/PwD).
  • Maximum 2 attempts in consecutive years are allowed.
  • You must have appeared in Class 12 for the first time in 2026 or 2027.
  • Minimum 75% aggregate in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST/PwD) or top 20 percentile in your board.
  • Students who have previously accepted an IIT seat are not eligible.

JEE Main 2027 Qualifying Cutoff

To appear in JEE Advanced 2027, you must first clear JEE Main 2027 and rank within the top 2,50,000 across all categories. The seats are distributed category-wise as shown below (based on 2026 trends — subject to revision for 2027):

Category Approximate Seats (Top 2,50,000)
General (CRL) ~1,01,000
OBC-NCL ~67,500
EWS ~25,000
SC ~37,500
ST ~18,750
PwD (horizontal, across categories) ~5% of each category

These figures are based on 2026 trends. JAB may revise the category-wise distribution for 2027. Appearing in both sessions of JEE Main 2027 — January and April — improves your chances, as your better NTA score is used for ranking.

Age Limit for JEE Advanced 2027

General, OBC-NCL, and EWS students must have been born on or after October 1, 2002. SC, ST, and PwD students receive a 5-year relaxation and must have been born on or after October 1, 1997.

Category Date of Birth On or After
General / OBC-NCL / EWS October 1, 2002
SC / ST / PwD October 1, 1997

Age is verified using the date of birth recorded in your Class 10 board certificate. No alternate document is accepted for age proof. Students born before the respective cutoff dates are not eligible, even if they qualify the JEE Main cutoff rank.

Number of Attempts Allowed

You can attempt JEE Advanced a maximum of 2 times, and both attempts must fall in two consecutive years. For JEE Advanced 2027, you are eligible if:

  • You are appearing in JEE Advanced for the first time in 2027, or
  • You appeared in JEE Advanced for the first time in 2026 and are attempting it for the second time in 2027.

Students who attempted JEE Advanced in both 2025 and 2026 have already exhausted their two attempts and are not eligible for 2027. Students who first appeared in 2024 or earlier are also ineligible, regardless of how many total attempts they took.

One key rule: appearing means physically sitting for at least one paper. Registering but not showing up for either paper does not count as an attempt.

Class 12 Qualification Requirement

JEE Advanced 2027 has two separate Class 12-related conditions. You must satisfy both:

Condition 1 — Year of First Appearance: You must have appeared in Class 12 (or an equivalent qualifying examination) for the first time in 2026 or 2027. Students who appeared for the first time in 2025 or earlier are not eligible, even if they appeared again in 2026 or 2027 to improve their marks.

Condition 2 — Minimum Marks: You must secure at least 75% aggregate marks across five subjects in Class 12, or rank in the top 20 percentile of successful students in your respective board.

Category Minimum Class 12 Aggregate Alternate Criterion
General / OBC-NCL / EWS 75% aggregate Top 20 percentile in board
SC / ST / PwD 65% aggregate Top 20 percentile in board

For boards that use a grading system, IITs compute an equivalent percentage based on the board’s official grading scale. The five subjects counted are those designated by your board as the core subjects for computing the final percentage.

The 75%/65% condition is verified during JoSAA counselling and document verification — not at the JEE Advanced registration stage. You may register and appear in the exam before your final Class 12 marks are declared, but you must meet this condition to be allotted an IIT seat.

Other Eligibility Conditions

No previous IIT admission: If you have previously accepted an IIT seat by paying the seat acceptance fee, you are not eligible for JEE Advanced 2027. This rule applies even if you left the IIT after joining.

Two specific exceptions apply:

  • Students who accepted a preparatory course seat at an IIT in 2026 (not a regular B.Tech or B.S. seat) and did not convert to a main programme are eligible for JEE Advanced 2027.
  • Students who accepted an IIT seat but cancelled within JAB’s official withdrawal window before the academic session started may also be eligible — subject to JAB’s specific notification for 2027.

Foreign nationals: Foreign nationals are not required to qualify JEE Main. They are assessed under a separate criterion defined by the conducting IIT for JEE Advanced 2027, typically through the DASA scheme or the IIT’s international student quota.

All five conditions must be satisfied simultaneously. Satisfying four out of five does not make you eligible — every condition must be met at the time of registration.
