• JEE Advanced 2027 qualifiers can simultaneously compete for IIT seats (using JEE Advanced rank) and NIT/IIIT/OTI seats (using JEE Main rank) in a single JoSAA registration.
• JoSAA 2027 is expected to conduct two mock allotment rounds before actual Round 1, giving students a chance to refine their choice order before locking.

Reservation of Quotas for JEE Advanced Counselling 2027

All IITs follow the Government of India’s statutory reservation policy for seat allocation through JoSAA. Reservation is applied separately within each academic programme at each IIT — not to the total IIT intake as a whole. The IIT Council additionally introduced a Female Supernumerary Quota to close the gender gap in IIT classrooms, adding extra female-only seats above sanctioned strength.

Step 1: Registration and Login

JoSAA 2027 registration is expected to open the day after JEE Advanced 2027 results are declared — mirroring JoSAA 2026, where results were declared on June 1 and registration opened on June 2 at 5 PM. Registration on josaa.nic.in is completely free for all eligible students.

• Visit josaa.nic.in and click on the "New Registration" or "Applicant Login" section.
• Enter your JEE Advanced 2027 Roll Number (and JEE Main Roll Number for NIT/IIIT/OTI preferences) and other required personal details.
• Create a password and complete your JoSAA profile: verify your category, PwD status, DS status, and contact information.
• After submission, you receive a JoSAA Registration Number — save this as your login credential for the entire process.
• No registration fee is charged at this stage.

Step 2: Seat Acceptance Fee Payment

The Seat Acceptance Fee (SAF) is paid after a seat is allotted to you in any round — not at registration. Based on JoSAA 2026, the SAF was ₹35,000 for General/OBC-NCL/EWS and ₹15,000 for SC/ST/PwD, identical for IIT and NIT+ seats.

• After checking your allotment result, log in to josaa.nic.in and initiate SAF payment via net banking, debit card, credit card, or UPI.
• SAF payment must be completed within the round-specific deadline (typically 3–4 days after each allotment result).
• If you choose Float or Slide and get upgraded to a better seat in a subsequent round, your SAF is automatically carried forward — no additional payment is required.
• If you withdraw completely from JoSAA after paying the SAF, the fee is forfeited.
• On joining your final allotted institute, the SAF is adjusted against your first-year tuition and hostel fee — it is not a sunk cost if you join.

Step 3: Choice Filling and Locking

Choice filling is the most consequential step of JoSAA counselling. During this window — in JoSAA 2026 it lasted only 9 days (June 2–11) — you select and rank your preferred Institute–Programme combinations. The JoSAA algorithm uses your choice order and rank to determine the highest-preference seat you can be allotted.

• Log in to josaa.nic.in and navigate to "Choice Filling."
• Search for programmes using filters: Institute Type (IIT / NIT / IIIT / OTI), Institute Name, Branch, and Category.
• Add each preferred option and arrange all choices in strict descending order of preference — your most-desired option at the top.
• Fill at least 25–30 choices covering multiple IITs, branches, and NITs to maximise your chances across all five rounds.
• You can edit your choices freely until you click "Lock Choices." Once locked, no changes are possible for any subsequent round.

JoSAA publishes two Mock Allotment rounds during the choice-filling window (in 2026: Mock 1 on June 8 and Mock 2 on June 10). Mock allotments show where your current choice order would place you — they are non-binding and carry no payment obligation. Use them to identify whether your top choices are realistic and to reorder before the lock deadline.

Step 4: Seat Allotment and Acceptance

JoSAA 2027 is expected to conduct five rounds of seat allotment. After each round, you must log in, check your allotment, and respond within the deadline by selecting one of four options: Freeze, Slide, Float, or Withdraw (explained in full in the Upgrade vs Freeze vs Withdraw section).

• Download your Seat Allotment Letter from your JoSAA dashboard and read all terms carefully.
• Select Freeze / Slide / Float and pay the SAF to provisionally accept the seat.
• After Round 5, your allotment is final — no further upgrades are possible within JoSAA. If allotted a NIT/IIIT/OTI seat, an additional Partial Admission Fee (PAF) must be paid in the post-Round 5 window to confirm your admission (see Fees section for details).

Step 5: Reporting to the Allotted Institute

After the final round, students who have accepted their seat must complete online document verification on the JoSAA portal and then report physically to the institute. Failure to report within the deadline permanently forfeits your allotted seat and the SAF you paid.

• Upload scanned copies of all required documents on josaa.nic.in within the online reporting deadline (expected: within 4 days of Round 5 for IIT seats, based on JoSAA 2026 pattern).
• If a document deficiency is flagged, correct and re-upload within the correction window to avoid cancellation.
• After online verification, visit your allotted institute on its designated reporting date, carrying all original documents and self-attested photocopies.
• Pay the balance first-year fees at the institute (SAF is adjusted; PAF is adjusted for NIT+ students).

How to Lock Choices for JEE Advanced Counselling 2027

Locking your choices in JoSAA 2027 is a one-time, irreversible action — after confirmation, your choice order is sealed for all five rounds. The choice-filling window in JoSAA 2026 was only 9 days long, so students should begin filling choices immediately on Day 1 of registration and use both mock allotments to refine before locking.

Step 1: Log In and Navigate to Choice Filling

• Go to josaa.nic.in and log in with your JoSAA Registration Number and password.
• Click the "Choice Filling" tab on your dashboard to open the preference builder.

Step 2: Search and Add Choices

• Use available filters — Institute Type, Institute Name, Academic Programme, and Category — to locate desired IIT/NIT/IIIT/OTI programmes.
• Click "Add to Choice List" next to each combination you want to include.
• Add all options before arranging — it is easier to reorder a complete list than to add items mid-arrangement.

Step 3: Arrange Choices in Strict Order of Preference

• After adding all options, use the drag-and-drop tool (or up/down arrows) to place your most-preferred option at the top and your least-preferred at the bottom.
• The JoSAA algorithm allocates the highest-ranked choice for which you meet the closing-rank cutoff — having your top choices correctly ordered is the only way to ensure this.
• Save the draft. You can return and reorder until the locking deadline.

Step 4: Review Mock Allotment Results and Refine

• When Mock Allotment 1 is published (~Day 6–7 of choice filling), check your simulated allotment.
• If the mock result is lower than expected, move realistic options higher and add more safety nets from NITs or IIITs in your preferred branch.
• Mock Allotment 2 (~Day 8–9) is your last chance to adjust before locking — act quickly since the choice-filling window closes shortly after.

Step 5: Lock Your Choices

• Once satisfied with your order, click "Lock Choices." A confirmation prompt will appear — read it carefully before confirming.
• After confirmation, download and save the Choice Locking Confirmation Receipt from your dashboard.
• You will not be able to modify choices for any subsequent round; the locked list applies to all five allotment rounds.

During online document verification on the JoSAA portal (after final allotment) and at the time of physical reporting to your allotted institute, you must present the following documents in original along with self-attested photocopies. Failure to produce any mandatory document during physical reporting results in automatic cancellation of your provisional admission.

How Much Money is Needed for JEE Advanced Counselling 2027?

JoSAA counselling registration is free of charge. The financial obligations arise only after a seat is allotted. There are two distinct fee components — the Seat Acceptance Fee (SAF), which is refundable/adjustable, and the Partial Admission Fee (PAF), which is non-refundable and applies only to students allotted NIT/IIIT/OTI seats. The amounts below are based on JoSAA 2026 actuals and are expected to remain similar in 2027 pending official notification.

Partial Admission Fee — Non-Refundable (NIT+ System Only)

The Partial Admission Fee (PAF) is an additional fee payable only by students allotted seats in NITs, IIITs, or OTIs (NIT+ system) — it does NOT apply to students allotted IIT seats. PAF is paid after the final JoSAA round (Round 5) to confirm institute-level admission, and is non-refundable once paid. It is, however, adjusted against the first-semester institute fee on joining. In JoSAA 2026, the PAF payment window was July 22–25, 2026.

Note: Even if you have already paid the SAF, your NIT/IIIT/OTI seat is NOT confirmed unless the PAF is also deposited within the PAF payment window. IIT-allotted students do not pay PAF at any stage.

Seat Acceptance Fee — Refundable / Adjustable

The Seat Acceptance Fee (SAF) is paid when you provisionally accept an allotted seat after any JoSAA round. Based on JoSAA 2026, the SAF is identical for IIT and NIT+ seats. Unlike PAF, the SAF is carried forward automatically if you are upgraded to a better seat and is adjusted against your institute fees on joining.

How SAF is handled in different scenarios:

• Upgraded to a better seat (Slide / Float): SAF is automatically carried forward to the upgraded allotment — no additional payment needed and nothing is deducted.
• Accepted seat and joined the institute: SAF is adjusted against your first-year tuition and hostel fees — it is not an extra cost if you join.
• Withdrew completely from JoSAA after paying SAF: The SAF is forfeited. Withdraw only if you are certain you will not join any JoSAA-allotted institute.
• Did not pay SAF within the deadline: Your allotted seat is cancelled for that round and you may be excluded from further rounds.

Note: Fee amounts are based on JoSAA 2026 actuals and are expected to apply in 2027. The official JoSAA 2027 fee structure will be published in the JoSAA 2027 Information Bulletin at josaa.nic.in.

Round-Wise Seat Allotment in JoSAA 2027

JoSAA 2027 is expected to conduct five rounds of seat allotment, following the JoSAA 2026 pattern where all five rounds concluded between June 13 and July 16, 2026. All seats — IIT, NIT, IIIT, and OTI — are allocated across these five rounds. After Round 5, remaining unfilled NIT/IIIT/OTI seats are offered through CSAB Special Rounds, which are a separate process.

How the JoSAA allotment algorithm works:

• In each round, the algorithm simultaneously processes all registered students’ choice lists and ranks. It assigns each student the highest-preference choice for which their rank satisfies the closing rank of that programme.
• Vacancies in each round arise from students who withdrew, chose Freeze (stopping upgrades), or failed to pay the SAF in the previous round — these freed seats flow into the next round’s pool.
• If you choose Float and a higher-preference option opens up in a later round, your seat is automatically upgraded — you do not need to take any special action other than having selected Float.
• JoSAA 2027 closing ranks for each IIT/NIT/IIIT programme will be published after each round and will reflect the actual demand; JoSAA 2026 closing ranks are available on josaa.nic.in as a historical reference.

Reporting to College After JEE Advanced Counselling 2027

Reporting is the final step that converts your provisional JoSAA allotment into an actual admission. It consists of two sequential phases: online document verification through the JoSAA portal, followed by physical reporting at the allotted institute. Both are mandatory and time-bound. Failure to report within the deadline permanently forfeits your allotted seat and the SAF you paid.

Phase 1 — Online Document Verification (JoSAA Portal):

• After your final allotment in Round 5, log in to josaa.nic.in and upload scanned copies of all required documents (see Documents Required section) within the online reporting deadline — in JoSAA 2026, IIT allottees had approximately 4 days from Round 5 results to complete online verification.
• The allotted institute verifies your documents remotely. You are notified of approval or deficiency via the portal and SMS/email.
• If a deficiency is flagged (e.g., unclear scan, wrong certificate format), you must re-upload the corrected document within the correction window. Unresolved deficiencies lead to provisional admission cancellation.
• Upon successful verification, a "Provisional Admission Confirmation" letter is generated on your JoSAA dashboard — download and preserve this.

Phase 2 — Physical Reporting at the Institute:

• Visit your allotted IIT/NIT/IIIT/OTI on or before its physical reporting deadline (typically July–August 2027; check your specific institute’s schedule).
• Carry all original documents, at least 8–10 passport-size photographs, and self-attested photocopies of every document.
• Pay the balance first-year fees — tuition, hostel deposit, and mess advance — at the institute’s fee counter or through its online portal (SAF is adjusted here for all allottees; PAF is adjusted for NIT+ students).
• Collect your Student ID, hostel room assignment, and orientation/induction schedule from the institute’s admission office.

Note: NIT+ system allottees must complete Partial Admission Fee (PAF) payment before the PAF deadline (expected: 3–4 days after Round 5 results, based on JoSAA 2026 pattern). Failure to pay PAF within the window cancels your NIT/IIIT/OTI seat even if online document verification was successful.

Upgrade vs Freeze vs Withdraw in JoSAA 2027

After each JoSAA allotment round, every student who has been allotted a seat must respond with one of four options — Freeze, Slide, Float, or Withdraw. In Freeze, Slide, and Float, you always retain your current seat as a fallback — you never lose a seat by choosing Slide or Float. Only Withdraw surrenders your seat permanently.

Strategic guide — which option should you choose?

• Choose Freeze if: your allotted seat is your first or second preference and you are certain you want it. A strong allotment in hand (e.g., IIT Bombay CSE) is worth more than an uncertain upgrade in a later round.
• Choose Slide if: you are happy with the institute but want a better branch at the same campus. Slide keeps your institute guaranteed while seeking a branch upgrade — lower risk than Float.
• Choose Float if: a significantly higher-ranked option (a more-preferred IIT or programme) appears higher on your locked choice list and you believe it may open up in remaining rounds. Float carries the most upside but relies on vacancies arising, which is not guaranteed.
• Choose Withdraw if: you have already secured admission elsewhere (e.g., at a private institute you prefer over any JoSAA option) and you want to free up the JoSAA seat for other students.

If you withdraw after accepting a seat, the SAF is forfeited — withdraw only if you are certain you will not join any JoSAA-allotted institute.

Note: After Round 5 (the final round), all float/slide statuses are resolved. If no upgrade materialised, your Round 4 allotment carries forward as your final allotment. There are no further JoSAA rounds — remaining seats are offered separately through CSAB Special Rounds, which require fresh registration.
