JEE Advanced 2019 Reservation (Minorities, Girls, Defence Quota)

JEE Advanced Reservation can be availed by candidates belonging to SC /ST /OBC (NCL)/ PwD / Defence Personnel categories in JEE Advanced. The category once submitted in IIT records, cannot be changed under any circumstances. Valid Proofs of eligibility need to be submitted in order to avail the reservation and have lower cutoffs for the rank lists.

Candidates appearing for JEE Advanced 2019must take note of the following points:

  • Unoccupied seats under OBC-NCL will be shifted to OPEN or GENERAL seats
  • Unoccupied PwD seats under each category will be made open to other candidates under those categories
  • Unoccupied SC/ST seats cannot be shifted to other categories

Candidates should be among 2,24,000 in JEE Main Paper 1 to be eligible for JEE Advanced. The following table shows the order to be followed while choosing top 2,24,000* candidates in various categories:

JEE Advanced Reservation Criteria for SC/ST/OBC-NCL

Indian nationals belonging to SC/ST/OBC-NCL are admitted under the seats reserved for them under the rules and guidelines laid down by Government of India. The category wise reservation matrix of seats (in percentage) is provided in the following table:

Note: Rest 50.5% seats are Open for all others. Within each of these four categories, 5% horizontal reservation is available for PwD candidates.

Important Points to Remember

  • Backward Classes should be present in the most recent and updated Central List of OBC (NCL)
  • Candidates appearing for JEE Advanced belonging to the Creamy Layer (CL) of OBC are not eligible for Reservations and are treated as part of the General (GEN) i.e. Unreserved category.
  • Candidates from OBC (CL) shall compete for Open Seats i.e. the seats for which everyone is eligible.
  • Eligibility for SC/ST reservation is determined and given to only those tribes and castes that are specifically and explicitly mentioned in the Central List of castes and tribes from corresponding states laid down by the Govt. of India.

SC/ST Candidates: Original and 1 attested photocopy of Category (SC/ST) certificate in the following format.

OBC (NCL) Candidates: Original and 1 attested photocopy of OBC-NCL category certificate (from the Central List available on required to be issued by the suitable authority in the format given below.

NOTE: The OBC certificate must be signed before June 01, 2019

JEE Advanced Reservation Criteria for Defence Personnel

Defence Service candidates are defined as children of defence/paramilitary personnel killed or permanently disabled in action at war front or peacetime operations.

  • 2 seats are reserved for allotment in each institute under JEE Advanced for DS candidates. However, in order to avail this preferential allotment, a DS candidate must qualify the JEE Advanced and hence, be in the Common Rank List of JEE.
  • DS Candidates are required to submit the following proforma for eligibility

JEE Advanced Reservation Criteria for PwD Candidates

Persons with Disability (PwD)- 5% seats (horizontally) are reserved in each of the following categories:

  1. OPEN i.e. GENERAL
  2. OBC-NCL
  3. SC
  4. ST


  1. 40% impairment preference: candidates with 40% or more disability irrespective of the type- locomotive, visual or dyslexic are given higher priority.
  2. Preference to Leprosy-cured candidates who are otherwise fit enough to take up the course.

Documents Required as a proof: Original and 1 attested photocopy of valid Disability certificate. Find the format below:

Details of Medical Authority issuing the Disability Certificate

The following Report is required to be submitted by Dyslexic candidates:

  • Handicap percentage should not be less than 40%
  • Permanent disability only
  • Issued from Govt. organization only.

A scribe is an individual who writes the examination for a person with a physical or learning disability and which restrains him from writing the examination. Typically, the scribe reads out the question and writes the response/marks the response in OMR sheet after the candidate says the final answer. For IIT JEE Advanced, scribe is a class 11 student from science stream having Mathematics as one of the subjects

  • PwD candidates (including Dyslexic, blind, lost fingers/hands, disability in upper limbs) can avail services of a scribe to mark responses in the OMR sheet
  • Send the Scribe Request form (find below) along with PwD Certificate/Dyslexic Evaluation report to Chairman, JEE Advanced uploaded during registration
  • Candidates cannot bring their own scribes. Zonal IITs do the needful
  • Candidate and scribe meet one day prior to exam (Saturday, May 18) along with IIT representatives
  • If found that candidate does not require the use of scribe: evaluation, ranking and admission stands cancelled

IIT Reservation For Girls

A decision has been taken at the level of the IIT Council to improve the gender balance in the undergraduate programs at the IITs. From 2018-19, 14% supernumerary seats will be reserved for female candidates. Earlier, the reservation for female candidates was approximately 8% of the total IIT seats. The supernumerary seats specifically for female candidates will be created without any reduction in the number of seats that were made available for non-female candidates.


Q.1 Is there sports quota at the IIT?

Ans. No. There is no sports quota for admission in IITs.

Q.2 What is the JEE Advanced reservation criteria for students applying from Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh? Is there any reservation or specific quota for them?

Ans. Seats allotted to foreign nationals are supernumerary with a cap of 10% of the total number of seats in every course. Foreign nationals are outside the ambit of reservation of seats under the OBC-NCL, SC, ST and PwD categories as defined by Government of India.

Q.3 How many seats are reserved for candidates belonging to Defence Service?

Ans. 2 seats are reserved for preferential allotment at all the IITs for candidates belonging to Defence Service. To avail the benefit, the candidate needs to be listed in the Common Merit List released after the announcement of JEE Advanced Result.
