JEE Advanced 2027 eligibility requires students to rank within the top 2,50,000 in JEE Main 2027, be born on or after October 1, 2002 (General/EWS/OBC-NCL), and have attempted JEE Advanced a maximum of 2 times in consecutive years.
JEE Advanced 2027 is the gateway to undergraduate programs at the 23 IITs across India. The Joint Admission Board (JAB) sets five mandatory eligibility conditions — JEE Main performance, age limit, number of attempts, Class 12 qualifying examination, and earlier IIT admission status. Students must satisfy all five criteria to register. Confirming your eligibility before you begin preparation helps you avoid any last-minute surprises at the registration stage.
- Only the top 2,50,000 students in JEE Main 2027 (across all categories combined) are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced 2027.
- General, EWS, and OBC-NCL students must have been born on or after October 1, 2002.
- SC, ST, and PwD students get a 5-year relaxation — must be born on or after October 1, 1997.
- You can attempt JEE Advanced a maximum of 2 times, in 2 consecutive years only.
- Your first attempt at Class 12 (or equivalent) must be in 2026 or 2027.
- Students previously admitted to any IIT are not eligible.

JEE Main 2027 Qualifying Cutoff for JEE Advanced
JEE Advanced 2027 eligibility based on JEE Main is determined by rank, not a fixed marks threshold. Only the top 2,50,000 students in JEE Main 2027 — across all categories combined — qualify for JEE Advanced. The shortlist follows category-wise reservation norms set by the government.
The table below shows the expected category-wise distribution of the 2,50,000 JEE Advanced qualifying seats, based on 2024 trends.
| Category | Expected Students Shortlisted (Based on 2024 Trends) |
|---|---|
| General (CRL) | ~96,187 |
| General – EWS | ~24,919 |
| OBC-NCL | ~67,241 |
| SC | ~37,186 |
| ST | ~18,513 |
| PwD (all categories) | ~5% horizontal reservation across above categories |
The JEE Main percentile cutoff for JEE Advanced changes every year based on paper difficulty and the number of students appearing. The table below shows the confirmed JEE Main 2024 cutoff percentile used for JEE Advanced 2024 shortlisting — the most recent confirmed data available.
| Category | JEE Main 2024 Cutoff Percentile (Confirmed) |
|---|---|
| General (CRL) | 93.23 |
| General – EWS | 81.78 |
| OBC-NCL | 79.68 |
| SC | 60.10 |
| ST | 44.09 |
| PwD | 0.11 |
The actual JEE Advanced 2027 qualifying cutoff will be announced after JEE Main 2027 Session 2 results are declared. In terms of marks, General category students typically need around 85–100 marks out of 300 to fall within the top 2,50,000, though this figure shifts with paper difficulty each year.
Age Limit for JEE Advanced 2027
General, EWS, and OBC-NCL students must have been born on or after October 1, 2002 to be eligible for JEE Advanced 2027. SC, ST, and PwD students receive a 5-year relaxation on the age limit.
| Category | Date of Birth Requirement |
|---|---|
| General / EWS / OBC-NCL | Born on or after October 1, 2002 |
| SC / ST / PwD | Born on or after October 1, 1997 |
Date of birth is verified using your Class 10 (or equivalent) board certificates. The date of birth on your JEE Main application must match your official documents exactly. There is no age relaxation for OBC-NCL students; only SC, ST, and PwD categories receive the 5-year relaxation.
Number of Attempts Allowed for JEE Advanced 2027
Students can attempt JEE Advanced a maximum of 2 times, and both attempts must be in 2 consecutive years. Registering for JEE Advanced but not appearing does not consume an attempt. Appearing for JEE Main alone also does not count as a JEE Advanced attempt.
| Scenario | Eligible for JEE Advanced 2027? |
|---|---|
| Appearing for JEE Advanced for the first time in 2027 | Yes — 1st attempt |
| Appeared in JEE Advanced 2026 for the first time | Yes — 2nd and final attempt |
| Appeared in JEE Advanced 2025 and 2026 | No — 2 attempts already exhausted |
| Appeared in JEE Advanced 2025 only, skipped 2026 | No — attempts must be consecutive |
| Registered for JEE Advanced 2026 but did not appear | Yes — absence does not count as an attempt |
JEE Main attempt limits are counted separately from JEE Advanced attempt limits. Students can appear for JEE Main multiple times under JEE Main rules without it affecting their JEE Advanced attempt count.
Class 12 Qualifying Examination Criteria
Students must have appeared in Class 12 (or an equivalent qualifying examination) for the first time in 2026 or 2027 to be eligible for JEE Advanced 2027. Students who first appeared in 2025 or earlier are not eligible, even if they clear JEE Main 2027.
| Year of First Class 12 Attempt | Eligible for JEE Advanced 2027? |
|---|---|
| 2027 (currently appearing) | Yes |
| 2026 | Yes |
| 2025 or earlier | No |
The criterion applies to the year of first attempt, not the year of passing. A student who appeared for Class 12 in 2025, failed, and reappeared in 2026 is NOT eligible because their first attempt was in 2025. Students with a compartment exam in 2026 after a 2025 first attempt are also ineligible.
Accepted qualifying examinations include: Class 12 from CBSE, ISC, or any recognized state board; International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma; Cambridge A Levels; and any qualification recognized as equivalent by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
IITs require a minimum 75% aggregate marks in Class 12 (or top 20 percentile in your respective board) for seat acceptance after JEE Advanced counselling. This is a seat-acceptance condition, not a JEE Advanced registration requirement.
Who is NOT Eligible for JEE Advanced 2027
Even if you rank within the top 2,50,000 in JEE Main 2027, you cannot register for JEE Advanced 2027 if any of the following conditions apply.
- You were admitted to an IIT in any earlier year — even if you cancelled, withdrew, or did not join after admission.
- Your first Class 12 attempt was in 2025 or earlier.
- You were born before October 1, 2002 (General/EWS/OBC-NCL) or before October 1, 1997 (SC/ST/PwD).
- You have already used 2 JEE Advanced attempts in previous years.
- You appeared in JEE Advanced 2025 but not in 2026 — attempts in 2025 and 2027 are not consecutive, so a 2nd attempt in 2027 is not allowed.
Important exception: Admission to an IIT Preparatory Course does not disqualify you from JEE Advanced 2027. Students who attended an IIT preparatory course in a prior year can still appear. Students who paid the JoSAA seat acceptance fee for an IIT but formally withdrew before the last withdrawal deadline should check the official JAB 2027 notification to confirm their specific eligibility status.

The exact JEE Advanced 2027 cutoff will be declared after JEE Main 2027 Session 2 results.
Ques. Can a student born in 2001 appear for JEE Advanced 2027?
Ans. No. General, EWS, and OBC-NCL students must be born on or after October 1, 2002 to meet the JEE Advanced 2027 age limit. A student born in 2001 is ineligible in these categories. Only SC, ST, and PwD students qualify under the relaxed limit of born on or after October 1, 1997.
Ques. How many total attempts are allowed for JEE Advanced?
Ans. Students can appear for JEE Advanced a maximum of 2 times, and both attempts must be in 2 consecutive years. If you appeared in JEE Advanced 2026 for the first time, JEE Advanced 2027 would be your 2nd and final attempt.
Ques. Is a minimum Class 12 percentage required to register for JEE Advanced 2027?
Ans. No minimum Class 12 percentage is needed to register for JEE Advanced 2027. This is the IIT seat-acceptance condition, not a JEE Advanced registration requirement.
Ques. If I joined an NIT through JoSAA in 2026, can I appear for JEE Advanced 2027?
Ans. Yes. Admission to NITs, IIITs, or GFTIs does not affect your JEE Advanced eligibility. The restriction applies only to students who were previously admitted to an IIT. If you meet all other JEE Advanced 2027 eligibility criteria, your NIT or IIIT admission is not a disqualifying factor.
Ques. Can students who first appeared in Class 12 in 2025 apply for JEE Advanced 2027?
Ans. No. Students whose first Class 12 (or equivalent qualifying examination) attempt was in 2025 or earlier are not eligible for JEE Advanced 2027. Only students who first appeared in 2026, or are appearing for the first time in 2027, satisfy this criterion.
