JEE Advanced 2027 eligibility criteria set the minimum requirements you must satisfy before you can register for the exam. There are five criteria: your JEE Main 2027 rank, your age, how many times you have already appeared in JEE Advanced, your Class 12 aggregate marks, and the subjects you studied in Class 12. You must meet all five. Missing even one makes you ineligible to register, regardless of your JEE Main score. The conducting IIT will release the official information brochure in early 2027, but these five criteria have been stable across recent years and are unlikely to change.
JEE Advanced 2027 Eligibility Criteria: Quick Overview
| Criterion | General / EWS / OBC-NCL | SC / ST / PwD |
|---|---|---|
| JEE Main 2027 rank | Top 2,50,000 (all categories combined) | Reserved seats within the 2,50,000 limit |
| Age limit | Born on or after 1 October 2002 | Born on or after 1 October 1997 |
| Number of JEE Advanced attempts | At most 2, in consecutive years | At most 2, in consecutive years |
| Class 12 aggregate marks | 75% aggregate, or top 20 percentile in the board | 65% aggregate, or top 20 percentile in the board |
| First attempt in Class 12 | 2025 or 2026 only | 2025 or 2026 only |
| Subjects in Class 12 | Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics mandatory | Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics mandatory |
Criterion 1: JEE Main 2027 Qualifying Rank
Only the top 2,50,000 candidates from JEE Main 2027 are allowed to register for JEE Advanced 2027. This limit applies across all categories combined. The 2,50,000 seats are divided category-wise using the reservation norms set by the Government of India. Your eligibility depends on your rank within your own category, not just your overall rank in JEE Main. The JEE Main 2027 qualifying rank for JEE Advanced will be announced after the JEE Main 2027 results are declared, expected in April to May 2027.
The table below shows the approximate category-wise distribution of the 2,50,000 qualifying seats based on the standard reservation structure. These numbers are used as reference until the official JEE Advanced 2027 brochure is out.
Category-wise JEE Main Qualifying Seats for JEE Advanced 2027 (Indicative)
| Category | Approximate Number of Qualifying Candidates | Reservation Percentage |
|---|---|---|
| Common Rank List (CRL) — General | Approx. 1,01,250 | 40.5% |
| GEN-EWS | Approx. 25,000 | 10% |
| OBC-NCL | Approx. 67,500 | 27% |
| SC | Approx. 37,500 | 15% |
| ST | Approx. 18,750 | 7.5% |
| PwD (horizontal) | 5% of seats in each category | Horizontal reservation |
If you belong to OBC-NCL, SC, ST, or EWS and your CRL rank is outside the general cutoff, you can still qualify if your category rank is within the limit for your category. The PwD reservation is horizontal: 5% of the seats in each category is reserved for PwD candidates from that category. A candidate who qualifies under more than one category is counted only once in the total of 2,50,000 unique candidates.
If you cleared JEE Main 2027 but your rank falls outside the 2,50,000 qualifying limit for your category, you are not eligible to register for JEE Advanced 2027, even if you meet all other criteria.
Criterion 2: Age Limit
You must have been born on or after 1 October 2002 to be eligible for JEE Advanced 2027. SC, ST, and PwD candidates get a five-year relaxation: they must have been born on or after 1 October 1997. There is no lower age limit.
| Category | Date of Birth (Must Be On or After) |
|---|---|
| General, EWS, OBC-NCL | 1 October 2002 |
| SC, ST, PwD | 1 October 1997 |
Your date of birth is taken from your Class 10 certificate or birth certificate. If you were born on 30 September 2002 or earlier and you belong to the General, EWS, or OBC-NCL category, you cannot appear in JEE Advanced 2027, even if your JEE Main rank is in the top 2,50,000. The age limit is applied strictly; there is no further relaxation beyond what SC, ST, and PwD candidates receive.
Criterion 3: Number of Attempts — The Two-Attempt Rule
You can appear in JEE Advanced at most two times in your lifetime, and the two attempts must be in consecutive years. This rule has no exceptions for General, EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, or PwD candidates. If you appeared in JEE Advanced 2026, you can appear in JEE Advanced 2027 as your second attempt. If you appeared in JEE Advanced 2025 and then skipped 2026, you cannot appear in 2027 because the gap breaks the consecutive-year rule.
What Counts as an Attempt?
Registering and paying the registration fee counts as an attempt, even if you do not sit for the exam on the day. The only exception is if the IIT cancels your registration before the exam because you were found ineligible. In that case, the attempt is not counted. If you sit for at least one of the two papers on the exam day, that is a confirmed attempt.
Attempt Scenarios for JEE Advanced 2027
| Your Previous JEE Advanced History | Eligible for JEE Advanced 2027? |
|---|---|
| No previous attempt in JEE Advanced | Yes (first attempt) |
| Appeared in JEE Advanced 2026 (first attempt) | Yes (second and final attempt) |
| Appeared in JEE Advanced 2025 and 2026 (two consecutive attempts) | No (both attempts used) |
| Appeared in JEE Advanced 2025 only, did not appear in 2026 | No (gap between attempts; consecutive rule broken) |
| Appeared in JEE Advanced 2024 and 2025 | No (two attempts already used in 2024 and 2025) |
| Admitted to IIT preparatory course after JEE Advanced 2026 | Yes (one more attempt is allowed for preparatory course students) |
Criterion 4: Class 12 Marks — The 75% Board Criterion
You must have passed Class 12 (or an equivalent qualifying examination) and scored at least 75% aggregate marks. SC, ST, and PwD candidates need at least 65%. If your aggregate is below the threshold, you can still qualify under the top 20 percentile rule: if your marks place you in the top 20% of all students who passed in your board that year, you are eligible even if your aggregate is below 75% or 65%.
| Category | Minimum Aggregate Marks | Alternative Route |
|---|---|---|
| General, EWS, OBC-NCL | 75% | Top 20 percentile of all successful candidates in the board |
| SC, ST, PwD | 65% | Top 20 percentile of all successful candidates in the board |
How the Aggregate Is Calculated
The aggregate is based on the five subjects your board uses to compute your pass percentage. For CBSE students, this is typically the best five subjects, with at least one language included. If your board uses a different method, the IIT applies that board’s own rule. Marks in subjects beyond the five that count for your board’s pass percentage are not included. If you are unsure which five subjects your board uses, check with your school or the board’s website before your Class 12 exam.
Year of First Attempt in Class 12
You must have appeared in Class 12 for the first time in 2025 or 2026. If you first sat for Class 12 board exams in 2024 or any earlier year, you are not eligible for JEE Advanced 2027. This applies even if you gave improvement exams in 2025 or 2026. The criterion checks the year of your first attempt at the Class 12 board exam, not the year you passed or improved your score.
Students who are appearing in Class 12 for the first time in 2027 (Class 12 board exams in February or March 2027) can register for JEE Advanced 2027 as appearing candidates. Their eligibility on this criterion is verified after their board results are declared. If the marks do not meet the 75% or 65% threshold and they also do not fall in the top 20 percentile, their JEE Advanced score will not be used for IIT seat allocation.
Criterion 5: Subjects in Class 12
You must have studied Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as subjects in Class 12. These three subjects are mandatory. A student who studied Biology instead of Mathematics, or who had only two of the three, does not meet this criterion. Your language subject (English, Hindi, or any regional language) counts separately and does not replace Physics, Chemistry, or Mathematics.
Candidates who studied from a board that offers combined subjects — for example, a board where Science is one subject covering Physics, Chemistry, and Biology without a separate Mathematics paper — should check the JEE Advanced 2027 information brochure for how their subjects are treated. In most cases, a separate Mathematics paper at Class 12 level is required.
Students Who Have Already Accepted an IIT Seat
If you have accepted a seat at any IIT through JoSAA counselling in 2026 or any previous year, you are not eligible to appear in JEE Advanced 2027. This applies even if you later withdrew the seat or cancelled the admission. The one exception is candidates who were admitted to an IIT preparatory course: they are allowed one more attempt in JEE Advanced.
Foreign Nationals
Foreign nationals who are not Indian citizens follow different rules. They do not need to appear in JEE Main to qualify for JEE Advanced 2027. The 75% board marks criterion applies to their qualifying examination equivalent to Class 12. Foreign nationals should refer to the dedicated section in the JEE Advanced 2027 information brochure for full details, as the number of seats reserved for them is separate from the 2,50,000 limit.
