BS Engineering Admission 2026
Admission to BS Engineering courses in India is done through central entrance tests, university-level merit lists, and direct Class 12 merit at private universities. The route depends entirely on whether the student is applying to a government college or a private university, because the two systems do not share a common counselling body the way BTech does through JoSAA.
Step 1: Selection of the Admission Route
The first step is to identify whether the target college admits through CUET UG or through its own merit process.
Government Colleges
Admission is provided through CUET UG for Delhi University colleges such as Bhaskaracharya College of Applied Sciences (BCAS) and Shaheed Rajguru College of Applied Sciences for Women (SRCASW).
State universities such as Acharya Nagarjuna University (ANU) and Bankura University (BU Purandarpur) admit through their own merit lists built on Class 12 marks.
Reservation applies as per Government of India norms for SC, ST, OBC, EWS and PwD categories.
Private Colleges
Private universities such as Amity University Noida, Sharda University and Galgotias University (GU) admit directly on Class 12 marks in the science stream.
Atria University Bangalore admits through its own university application and profile-based selection for the 4-year BS programmes.
Deemed universities such as SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST) and Jain University admit through institutional merit and university application.
Step 2: Application and Registration
Candidates register online through the CUET UG portal for central university colleges, or directly on the university website for private institutions. Scanned Class 10 and Class 12 marksheets, photograph, signature and category certificate are uploaded at this stage. The CUET UG application window for the 2026 cycle opens in January 2026, while private university applications stay open from November through to the start of the session.
Step 3: Entrance Examination or Merit Screening
CUET UG is conducted by NTA for admission to Delhi University colleges and other central universities, with the subject combination of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and a language paper being the one accepted for applied science programmes. State universities conduct their own merit screening on Class 12 aggregate. The IITs run an online qualifier test, which a candidate clears before entering the Foundation level. Private universities require no entrance exam for most BS Engineering streams.
Step 4: Merit List and Seat Allotment
Delhi University colleges allot seats through CSAS counselling rounds based on the CUET UG score and the programme-specific combination. State universities publish departmental merit lists. Private universities issue rolling offer letters as applications are processed, which is why early application improves the chance of securing a seat in high-demand streams such as Computer Science and Data Science.
Step 5: Document Verification and Fee Payment
Allotted candidates complete document verification, pay the admission fee within the stated deadline, and confirm the seat. Delay in fee payment releases the seat to the next candidate in the merit list.
Types of BS Engineering Programs
- BSc (3-Year Program): The standard route after Class 12 in the science stream, covering 6 semesters of coursework and laboratory work. This is the most widely available format across Indian universities, offered at state universities and most private universities.
- BSc under UGCF (4-Year Program): The Delhi University format introduced under NEP 2020, with a deeper core in one stream such as Instrumentation or Electronic Science and an exit option at the end of the third year. It leads directly into MSc and MTech entry.
- BS (4-Year Program): The international pattern degree with 8 semesters, industry immersion and a capstone project. Atria University Bangalore runs this format with E-Mobility and Energy Sciences specialisations.
- BSc in Applied Safety Streams: Vocational engineering programmes such as Fire and Industrial Safety, built around industry certification and field training rather than research.
- Online BSc and BS: Offered in non-laboratory streams such as Data Science, Computer Science and Electronic Systems, running 3 to 4 years depending on the exit level chosen. IIT Madras and IIT Guwahati both use this format.
| Program Type | Duration | Target Audience | Example Colleges |
| BSc under UGCF | 4 Years | Students targeting MSc or MTech | BCAS Delhi, SRCASW Delhi |
| BS (4-Year) | 4 Years | Students wanting an industry-immersion degree | Atria University Bangalore |

BS Engineering Eligibility Criteria 2026
Eligibility for BS Engineering is set on Class 12 performance rather than an engineering entrance rank. The criteria vary slightly between government and private institutions.
- Educational Qualification: The candidate must have passed Class 12 in the science stream with Physics and Mathematics as core subjects, along with Chemistry, Computer Science or Biology depending on the stream chosen.
- Minimum Marks: Delhi University colleges and central universities need a strong CUET UG score with a Class 12 science background. Private and state universities set the bar at 50% aggregate for General category and 45% for SC, ST and PwD candidates.
- Stream-Specific Requirement: Mathematics in Class 12 is compulsory for Instrumentation, Electronic Science, Computer Science, Software Engineering and Data Science. Fire and Industrial Safety accepts any science stream.
- Age Limit: There is no upper age limit for CUET UG or for private university admission to BS Engineering programmes.
BS Engineering Top Colleges & Accepted Exams 2026
10 colleges lead BS Engineering admission in India, spanning 2 IITs, 2 Delhi University colleges, 2 state and deemed universities each and 3 private universities, with total fees running from INR 25.19 K to INR 28.80 Lakh. BS Engineering vs BTech
BS Engineering runs 3 to 4 years under UGC regulation against BTech's fixed 4 years under AICTE, and the most common question on this course is whether the two are equal. The two are separate qualifications with different regulators, durations and career entry points, and students should choose based on whether they want a licensed engineering career or a faster applied route into industry.
| Parameter | BS Engineering | BTech |
| Duration | 3 years at most universities; 4 years under UGCF at Delhi University and in BS programmes | 4 years |
| Regulator | UGC | AICTE |
| Admission | CUET UG or Class 12 merit | JEE Main, JEE Advanced, state CETs |
| Focus | Scientific principles with applied laboratory work | Engineering design, workshops and core industry practice |
| Higher Study Route | MSc, MTech through GATE, MBA | MTech through GATE, MS abroad, MBA |
