B.Tech Mechanical Engineering: What is it About?

First thing any engineering aspirant considers while choosing a branch in Engineering is placement aspect and the course very well caters to it. A few questions which arise when admissions to engineering colleges commence include the branch in demand, highest paid engineering graduates and others such.  Apart from this palcement criteria, there are some other parameters which should be considered while choosing a discipline like- what are the research opportunities, what is scope of career growth etc.

Mechanical Engineering is the evergreen branch of engineering. Market scenario and demand of engineering graduates change every year but the demand of mechanical engineering degree will never be obsolete. Mechanical engineering graduates can find placements in almost every sector, right from construction sector to steel industry and from automobile to software.

Following are the sub disciplines that are associated with mechanical engineering:

  • Production Engineering
  • Industrial Engineering
  • Manufacturing Engineering
  • Automobile Engineering

B.Tech Mechanical Engineering: Eligibility

Candidates willing to apply for Mechanical Engineering degree need to fulfil the below-mentioned eligibility criteria.

  • 10+2 or equivalent qualification from a recognized board
  • Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry/Biotechnology, language and any other subject at 10+2 level
  • Minimum aggregate score of 50% at 10+2 level
  • All reserved category students have a 5% relaxation in minimum aggregate

B.Tech Mechanical Engineering: Admission Process

There are about 4300 engineering colleges in India. Admission to most of the engineering institutes is done on the basis of one of the several entrance tests conducted at national and state level. Some private institutes also conduct their own entrance test. However, some institutes also offer direct admission on the basis of merit in qualifying exam or on the basis of management quota.

Basic admission process in different engineering institutes is explained below.

10+2 with PCM (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics) is the basic requirement to take admission in any BE/B.Tech program. Percentage required in qualifying exam is 50% for most of the engineering institutes. For some top prestigious institutes like IITs, NITs or BITS the percentage criteria extends to 60%.

Following is the criteria for admission through different modes:

Direct Admission- Engineering institutes which offer direct admission have certain criteria for admission. Either they offer admission on the basis of merit in qualifying exam i.e. 10+2 or equivalent or there are some management seats reserved in private engineering colleges. For management quota the fee structure is generally higher than others.

Direct Admission for Diploma holders- Various engineering colleges in India also offer direct admission to ITI diploma holders in second year of the course.

Entrance Exams- There are several entrance exams in India at national and state level. Some private institutes like SRM University, BITS Pilani, VIT University etc conduct their separate entrance test. Some main national level and state level engineering entrance tests are below-

B.Tech Mechanical Engineering: Syllabus and Course Description

Mechanical Engineering course structure is designed in such a way, that one would learn theoretical and practical knowledge of different fields that are covered in the study of mechanical engineering. The main subjects areas are- Strength of Materials, Materials Science, Thermodynamics, IC Engines, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, Automobile Engineering etc.

In most of the engineering institutes, first year of every branch has common subjects. Second year onwards the specialization starts. Thus, the first year courses are similar for everyone.

Following is the basic course structure in most of the engineering institutes in India-

Mechanical engineering basically involves study of core concepts of mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics, materials science, structural analysis, and electricity. Apart from that there are some tools that are studied to enhance the skills of mechanical engineering.

Core Subjects of Mechanical Engineering

Following are some core subjects of mechanical engineering which are taught in most of the engineering colleges in India. However this is not the complete list of subjects, it may differ from institute to institute-

  • Strength of Materials
  • Thermodynamics
  • Manufacturing Process
  • Fluid Mechanics
  • Machine Design
  • Heat and Mass Transfer
  • Theory of Machines
  • IC Engines
  • Automobile Engineering
  • Power Plant Engineering
  • Refrigeration and Air Conditioning

Lab Subjects

Lab practicals and workshops are the most essential part of mechanical engineering course. Following are the subjects which are studied under laboratories of mechanical engineering-

  • Materials science and testing Lab
  • Machine Design
  • Thermodynamics Lab
  • Heat and Mass Transfer Lab
  • IC Engine Lab
  • Computer Aided Design
  • Workshops

Elective subjects

Apart from core subjects, there are some elective subjects in each semester. Some common elective subjects are-

  • Materials Science
  • Discrete Mathematics
  • Fluid Machinery
  • Non-Conventional Energy Resources
  • Advanced Welding Technology
  • Mechanical System Design

Above subjects and electives are taken from some universities' curriculum. This is not the complete syllabus of Mechanical engineering. This will give you a general idea about mechanical engineering course syllabus.

B.Tech Mechanical Engineering: Career Prospects

Mechanical Engineering has always been the most prefered branch of engineering. Career opportunities in Mechanical Engineering have also been immense since its inception. Mechanical Engineering jobs are easily available in both private and public sectors. In fact, public sector is the most preferred sector for mechanical engineers

Different Roles for Mechanical Engineers

The job profile of mechanical engineers can be classified into the following areas:

  • Research and Development (R&D): This is the most prestigious sector for mechanical engineers. Some public sectors offer handsome salary.
  • Design: Design engineering is based on CAD tool. This is the most promising sector for mechanical engineers nowadays.
  • Production: This is the most common job for mechanical engineers. Also it is the most sought after jobs in India for mechanical engineers.
  • Analysis and testing: This is also a new trending job along with design. In this job you have to test the products. Quality control is also the part of it.
  • Installation: This is also basic plant job for mechanical engineers. In this part machines are installed in the plant under the supervision of engineers.
  • Maintenance: Maintenance job is related with maintenance of machines using different tools of mechanical engineering.
  • Following is the sector wise analysis for mechanical engineers, as public and private both the sectors have immense opportunities for mechanical engineers.
